I have a problem with a player!

However, if the players do not own the DMG, then they wouldn't necessarily know this passage is there...

Hmmm, I guess that is possible, but as I see it, I still think that all but the newest of players would know that passage.

Whenever a player says "I not going to play becuase of <insert self indulgent reason here>"

I politely say that it was nice playing with them and maybe next campaign, have a nice life.

Sadly, they almost never leave.

As a player in Lavinia's group I have to say that I was rather surprised at the harsh reaction a mere 50XP less were causing, especially considering that the average XP total for that session was near 2000XP.

It's quite normal to award XP for good role-playing, paying attention to the DM and or making everyone having a good laugh in our group. We had a good time throughout the adventure but when she handed out XP the atmosphere was instantly poisoned.

Some players start feeling punished when others get more XP than they do and somehow I feel that the discussions would have come up even if she would have awarded bonus XP in the single digits. As for me, I'm no longer willing to put up with this player's bahaviour and next time something similar happens I'll vote for kicking him out.

What I do is I make sure everyone understands how I handle XP ahead of time.

1) I use the alternate XP system out of the 3.5e DMG.
2) I give pretty darned generous roleplaying awards that *I* decide people get. (Generally CL x 50)
3) I give people a chance to vote on a bonus RP award (again, generally CL x 50), voting for someone besides themselves at the end of each session.
4) I will sometimes hand out XP for favors done by players, such as someone getting me Book of Vile Darkness. :)

But the main thing is that I make sure people are aware of this ahead of time.

I see much potential in this form of bribery.

Yes, and I have no problem with that. :D

Within reason. Generally, the option is presented to people that are lagging a little behind in the XP department, like 3 or more levels.

I love handing out XP for good roleplaying. My players know this. They know it is not just for making me laugh or for pulling a wild stunt, but for being true to character even when it is against the player's best interest.

Each session I hand out Party XP, and then Individual XP. The party stuff is a lump ("Okay gang, for completing the mission, or getting close, everyone gets 350XP"). The Individual stuff is labelled as such ("Okay, B, you get 175XP for manically attacking that Elf Lord despite the odds, another 25XP for that stunt with the wine bottle, and...etc.).

The point is that my players know this is the way I operate and they are good with it. I have yet to have a bad reaction to the system.

Then again, I have a very cool set of players. :D

You might think this is extreme but I suggest doing away wth experience until the end of your run as a DM and then handing out totals for the players.

D&D becomes more focused on the storyline when players are no longer thinking about how much experience they could receive by doing something or killing something.

As for the player, I'd tell him to F-off if he's going to whine over 50 experience points. I don't have time for juvenile BS that your player is pulling and you are totally correct that you don't need the hassle either. Let him go be a whiner in someone else's game. ;)

Thanks a lot to you all.
Although from sunday evening until now it was a hard time I can now also laugh about these things again.
As you can see from the thread from Marimmar ( one of the players in my party ) he represents the average position of my party.
But after thinking about some threads I would like to ask another question to the one leaving the XP system behind them.
When do you decide the party levels or not?
Are you counting sessions or something like that?
What happens when for example players lose levels?
And what happens to mages when they are scribing scrolls?
Maybe you can give me short overview on this.
Perhaps I have the option to put this into my party!
