i lost almost everything

If you still have the drive, you can go to ontrack.com and download a trial version of their software to see if there is any valid data on the drive before you either purchase the software or have it taken somewhere to retrieve the data. I purchased a product from them called "Tiramitsu" (sp?) that I believe is Italian for "get your data back" or something like that. I didn't see the software listed on their site (I purchased it years ago) and I think it cost around $300 or so. I have since used it to retrieve information from drives that had been reformatted by viruses and such. Something to think about.....

Mark - go to RPGnow and check your account. There is a section called "History" that indicates what you have purchased over the history of your account.

Then email custserv@rpgnow.com and explain your situation, and they should have NO problem resending your stuff to you.

That's rough. My condolences.

(Also one of many reasons why I'll never purchase a pdf.)

Too bad, considering that RPGnow will replace your lost PDF for you. They keep their transaction records on file and all you have to do is explain why you need a fresh copy of the PDF, and they will send it to you.

If you no longer have your password to access your RPGnow account, you can also ask any publisher who works through RPGnow to check their sales records to find out what products of that publisher's you have purchased and arrange for new copies to be sent that way.

If I have a house fire that destroyes my gaming collection, at least I know that I can get all my PDFs back within a few days... whereas it would take ages to replace my d20 hardcopy collection.

the guy at my local shop saved my documents file begfore sending it to the manufacturer, who erased everythign else before sending it off.

Oh my, where to begin?

One, I think it's very unreasonable that your hard disk crashed when your motherboard died. It happens, yes, but rarely (lets say if the computer reboots in an infinte loop, this is not healthy for your drives).

Two, If the drive really crashed (read: FUBAR), the guy at the local store couldn't have read from it and saved the “my documents” folder.

I want you to describe all the problems you've had with your computer this far, including what happened to the motherboard, the hard disk and such.

Why? Because I don't think your hard disk crashed at all,
regardless of what this local tech guy has told you.

Regarding the original question, I've tried a whole lot of data recovery programs. The best one yet is R-Studio ( http://www.r-tt.com/RStudio.shtml )

Just wanted to offer my sympathies alsih. I had a similar situation when the plug import on my laptop went on the fritz. Since my laptop didn't have a removeable harddrive option, that basically meant I couldn't turn it on, since it couldn't be plugged in. I took it to two repair shops, and had my dad (an electrician) try to fix it before it finally gave up the ghost.

I was lucky, I had plenty of time to see the end coming, and was able to save everything I wanted onto CDs (except some wav files of myself doing kooky voices for fun). I hope that you can get your data back, since the people here have already offered you some really good advice. In the future, make periodic CD copies!
