I met some trolls... (on a messageboard)

Some of you may know that since I discovered Castles & Crusades, I almost forgot everything else (RPGs wise). However, when I went to their dedicated messageboards (not the one on TLG site, another), I noticed something I didn't like very much. There seemed to be a small bunch of zealots not to my liking, but well. Today I met two of them.

I first made the criminal offense of suggesting a houserule inspired by Iron Heroes stunt system. (For a zealot the only politically correct stance is to post praises to their favored system. All is good, nothing must be changed, heretics will be flamed... and how everything else sucks.) So, I was quickly reminded that Monte Cook was just a poor mind who eventually discovered something that AD&D players had known for ages, and then told that rpgs weren't for me and that I should better play video games. Then, I made the second mistake of answering that I didn't like this aggressive tone, just to be retorted I was the one aggressive. It makes sense: I had the impudence, in discussing houserules, of suggesting that AD&D and C&C may not be perfect systems. And then, a rightful inquisitor should not be argued with.

At least, I will have learn (hopefully) about being cautious when posting on a thread about subjects I don't like... :uhoh:

Impudent human, how dare you question the faithfull posters in their home domain?

Seriously, everyone has different tastes. I played C&C once, and quite quickly decided that it wasn't for me, because I like the openness of D&D/D20 for character choices, combat maneuvers, and other fun things like that. C&C has some merit (It worked well in the game I played it in, I will give it that), but I like a more robust (as opposed to a "rules lite") system.

Of course, I'd probably get flamed off that board faster than you, if I ever went there, which I won't.

Believe it or not, they're likely the ones calling you a troll. I never liked that lable, and people use it for others way too often. A true troll posts counter to the general board oppinion in a way to try to incite a reaction out of them, and does it intentionaly, again and again. I've actualy not seen a troll here on Enworld, though I've seen a few people labled trolls by others.

I'll have to dig it up, but I actualy wrote a song about Trolls for another board. Went to the tune of Bad Boys.

Bad Trolls, Bad Trolls
Whatcha gonna do
Whatcha gonna do when they post here too

:)

Indeed, I understand what you mean. It's always annoying to find a new board and post there, to find zealots, as you say, who do not give a damn about understanding your post, look at it in the narrowest possible way because they can't think otherwise, and yell "it's against the rules! it's against the rules!"

I've got a few examples of these... :]

One of them at a DL board, where I enquire of the fan's view of Soth's episode in Ravenloft :)

Are you serious? I think this is one of the best, if not the best, message boards I've found on this internet we all know and love. I don't ignore anyone in here. (although I've come close once or twice....)

Yep. Standard primate behavior. You see it everywhere in one form or another. Welcome to the monkey house :)

I had the gall to bash Unearthed Arcana or Arcan Unearthed or whatever here and have found out

1. My group sucks
2. I have no idea how to role play
3. I can't make a character that is any good

Oh well.

I would respond to this, but I know Diaglo won't be able to see it.

Just kidding, of course. I don't think I've cheesed him off. :uhoh:

ENWorld is the friendliest message board I frequent. Bar none.

Which says more about messageboards than it does about ENWorld.

Every niche has it's own group of zealots. Even here at ENWorld you can see the OD&D, AD&D (both 1E and 2E), 3E, 3.5E, Rolemaster, HARP, C&C, and so on purists that defend their game against the sins of kitbashing and houseruling. However, this place is a damn sight friendlier than most places on the 'net.

I've found over the years that going to a publisher's website will allow you to discover the truly fanatical, however. I tend to avoid them in favor of larger sites like ENWorld. It used to be RPG.net, but that place just irked me after a while.
