Seems fine to me. The wizard can have their familiar deliver the spell too, so they don't even need to be nearby.
You might argue that 'blade ward' would be a more broken cantrip when facing a marilith because you've reduced so much damage. I also have no problem with this.
In fact, I think the marilith might need some additional beefing up to make them scarier. Archers don't care about the parry ability at all.
Maybe I'll give the next one I throw at the players a couple of levels of monk so she can deflect some of those pesky arrows.
