After the final Orog fell and weapons were stowed away, Valda took a moment to down a vial of reddish liquid from her belt, the effects of the potion numbing the soreness and pain of previous battles. Following the group down the corridor, she indicated silently to Jack that she was going to follow with those going ahead.
Bible, Jack, and Valda crept up the steep tunnel to find two stone giants sleeping on the hard ground (though presumably, being stone giants, they did not mind it). Their clubs were leaning against the far walls, and they had a large chest that likely contained their personal belongings. These giants were the overseers of the excavation, but they were not normally residents of the steading. They clearly were used to hard work, including sleeping rough when they could find the time to do it. Neither of them noticed as the three "smalls" crept into their chamber.
OOC:
I mean, I guess you can assassinate them if you're feeling inclined. Though I will often allow scenes like this to go without rolling, these are STONE giants, so I can see how a single dagger, no matter how well thrusted, might not finish them off. So if you want to try, you'll still need to roll attacks, albeit with advantage, naturally, and you auto-crit on a success. Either way, if they live, they'll wake up. So I guess this is round one? (Assuming that's what you do).
Jack drew The Knife and moved in decisively toward one of the slumbering oppressors.
OOC:
Unless Valda or Bible react to stop him, Jack would draw his dagger and attempt to assassinate the one he's next too. He's too tired and hungry for vengeance to be very thoughtful at this point. Assuming the others don't stop him, here's the rolls:
Although Bible recognizes the opportunity to attempt to slay the sleeping giants, her priority is to get the prisoners to safety without taking unnecessary risks. She knows Cordit is counting on her to get her out alive.
On the other hand, she respects Jack's freedom to determine his own fate, so watching him advance towards his victim, dagger in hand, she shrugs, stands aside, and unsheathes her own sword. She nods to Valda thinking, ~<Let's you and me get in poz-ish-kun around this same one that Jack's attackin' an' cause it as much hurt as poskible with the firsk blow!>~
She then raises her sword and attempts to plunge it as deeply as she can into the sleeping giant's neck.
It's an interesting scenario, that rules don't cover well. Some DMs will just handwave it (which I'd probably do with a lesser foe); while some will just play by-the-book (in which assassination of anything other than the wimpiest of foes is impossible). Here, I want it to be possible for you to assassinate (even a giant) but not quite automatic (especially not for one character). I'm going to add the benefit of saying that this giant, while sleeping, effectively has half HP (no "defending" or "luck"-based HP). If he survives and wakes up, he'll get them back, but if Valda can finish him off, (Advantage, Auto-Crit), then he's done for. @Shadowedeyes? It's up to you.
Sure. If you're successful, that'll probably do it for this giant. I'll roll to see if the other one is awoken, and if not, you can repeat the killer attempt.
Having driven her sword into the giant with her first thrust, Bible pulls out the blade and plunges it in once again, hoping to hit some vital part of the giant's anatomy.
