D&D 5E [IC] Against the Slavelords

[section]During the extended rest, Levanna somehow managed to either find a comfortable spot on the cold floor, or else she hit herself with a Sleep spell. Hours later, she awoke with a refreshed stretch. She waved her hand and, after a few arcane syllables added on, the stink of the previous day was expelled from her body and clothing.

The next hour or so, Levanna seemed to go from procrastination, to intense study of her spell book, to chanting in a strange language, to firing off sparking and shining wisps of magic from her finger tips in odd directions pausing only briefly to nod to Tirion as he excused himself.

At one point, she was studying her newly found ring intently. "Interesting... I shall have to learn that spell," she said to no one in particular.

At the end of it all, she swept her cloak around her once more and, as she pulled her hood over her head, she announced "There.. I hope this will prove to be a bit more helpful than I was the last day or so." She stood tall before the party, with her largely absent familiar, Ciymtrhax the celestial hawk, perched upon her shoulder.

"As for the hallway, I still believe that our goal lies deeper within this complex."[/section]

[sblock=actions]Levanna will cast the spells I stated earlier, now :)

And she'll also dismiss Ciymthrax and re-summon him, since he hasn't been in contact with her. She'll assume he saw nothing.

Does Levanna have a best guess as to which way would lead deeper into this compound?

Round 0

Tirion nodded in agreement to Levanna as she stood up. “Then let us proceed and get this over with.” He looked up. “Though I hope we were not missed in the city,” he mused.

Quietly opening the door again, Tirion nodded to Quellathe. “Lead the way,” he told the elf. “How far behind you do you want us?” he asked her, glancing at Uhtred in his noisy armor. While Tirion wasn’t particularly graceful or quiet, he was grateful for his father’s mithril plate that made very little noise.

Murmuring a prayer for guidance, Tirion followed the elf and her panther out.

Uhtred, Fighter 6

As the group settled in for a rest Uhtred set about his own personal admin. Looking over his weapon for any sign of rust he carefully touched up the blade then oiled it. Removing his armour, he cleaned himself meticulously, maintaining what little privacy he could in the close confines by hiding behind his pack. He ate then then examined his armour for signs of rust as he put it back on and settling in for as much sleep as he could hope for in comfort of his armour.

When they awoke later, somewhat refreshed, he listened to the other companions.

"I appreciate your bravery in so often going first, master dwarf, but the armour you wear is a bit loud. Perhaps Naeris and I should be ahead to scout?" said Quellathe. "Yes," agreed Uhtred, "I've never been much for scouting. If I take the lead at the front of the group, you'll have somewhere safe to retreat too if you do run into any trouble."

"I agree, we do need to be more structured in our exploring, at least we have made a somewhat safe area to retreat to."

Hi kit stowed and armour refitted properly, Uhtred sat and waited for the rest of the party, who seemed nearly ready to leave.

In the morning after a quick breakfast, the heroes gather up their gear and head back down the stairs and into the dungeon below the temple. This time the ranger and her cat lead the way, starting off just a bit as to maybe get a jump on anything before the sounds of their less stealthy companions give them away.

Returning to the chamber where they first faced the insect men, they head down the left cave tunnel that leads in a general north-westerly direction (and under the temple itself). After about fifty yards of twists and turns the cave tunnel opened onto an ancient sewer tunnel, lined with stone-brick. On one side of the tunnel was a wide five foot ledge that was three feet over the slowly floating mire of sewage below*. The smell confirmed that there were still living folk in the temple as the sewage was… fresher than would be found in an abandoned one.

The sewage tunnel itself lead in a general northern for about fourty feet when Quellathe spotted a wooden bridge ahead. The tunnel itself split, with the main tunnel continuing north and the side tunnel leading west, accessible by the wooden bridge that spanned it. The wooden bridge was supported by stone pillars that cresses the river of sewage at this point. The bridge is five feet wide and has no railing. It appears to be well built and sturdy.

GM: *The main sewer tunnel is 15 feet wide, 5 of that is the ledge. The ceiling is 10 feet over the ledge and the ledge is 3 feet over the sewage below. You are not sure how deep the sewage runs, but it is probably no more than 5 feet

So you have two directions you can go from here. Continue going north with the main sewer tunnel or go west towards this secondary sewer tunnel (crossing the bridge). The secondary one appears to be slightly smaller… maybe only ten feet wide, including the 5ft ledge, but other dimensions the same.

Tirion stepped carefully, covering his mouth and nose a bit as they moved into sewer tunnels. There was definitely something living up above. This was way too fresh. At least there was a walkway.

They finally reached a point where a smaller, secondary sewer tunnel went off to the left.

“Any opinions?” Tirion asked. “Continue going left?” He glanced down the side tunnel. Without any hint of what they were looking for or where it might be, they had no real information on which to make a decision.

“Levanna, how well does your hawk see? Can it see in the dark? Could it scout the tunnels ahead? Maybe if I cast light on something it can carry?”

Uhtred, Fighter 6

Uhtred wrinkled his nose at the smell, nothing worse than the end of a battle, just more contained.

“Any opinions?” Tirion asked when they reached a junction. “Continue going left?”

"Might as well, without a map, we are just beating the bushes." Uhtred replied.

When Tirion suggested sending Ciymtrhax ahead with a light Uhtred countered, "I'm reluctant to announce our presence with a light before we need to. Quellathe can see well in the dark and with her scouting ahead we have a good chance of getting the drop on whatever we run into. The main group shuffling along in the dark proved nearly disastrous, so let's not do that again, but sending light out ahead of us blindly could prove equally problematic."

[section]The reeking stench that wafted up from the sewage below irritated Levanna's nostrils. In a flash of introspection, she noted that she was not gagging in full retreat from the area, a fact that almost scared her.

"I'm afraid that Ciymthrax cannot see in the dark," she answered the the cleric. "...yet. That would be very helpful indeed..." she continued to herself. The hawk turned its head, seemed to glare at her, and squawked out a warning.

Leaving the consideration such magical feats for another time, Levanna indicated the bridge with a small wave of her lit staff. "Examining the bridge may tell us more. Which way shows signs of heavier use? I suspect that way would lead toward the 'most important' 'chambers' in this miserable lair. Quellathe, could you detect such signs?"[/section]

Looking for any signs of travel, Quellathe can see that what little there appears to be mostly travels over the bridge and back the tunnel the heroes just came from. There are few if any signs or tracks leading northerly...

GM: If Quellathe wants to make a Wisdom (Survival) check she might get more info from the tracks

While the smell was putrid, Quellathe was grateful that the stench of the sewer wasn't making her as sick as she had been yesterday during the battle. Seeing the tracks on the bridge, Quellathe bent her attention to trying to read what she could from them.

After careful consideration he loads a regular bolt rather than a magical one. Kelvyn wrinkles his nose involuntarily. He remains quiet and hopes nobody says anything about his choice of direction given the smell. He moves forward with the group, and keeps an eye out for trouble.
