Neither Trickle nor Khirynnax seem inclined to dissuade Tristan from cutting the spider's web. They subtly shift, almost without thinking about it, to guard Hawthorne. Khirynnax grips his staff in both hands and Trickle sheaths his sword and dagger and readies his ragged bow.

Khirynnax was an outsider, too fey for the humans, too unseelie for the elves. He didn’t care because he sensed a deeper essence, pure and powerful, that he needed to understand. When a halfling told him there was one who could put him on the path that might lead to his understanding Khirynnax didn’t hesitate. "Sir Tristan, your enthusiasm overcomes your sense! I'd rather deal with one curious spider than a hundred angry ones!" Hawthorne says with high anger as she grips her staff in both hands.

Why oh why did men with armor and grand swords see all problems as a target to destroy?

Khirynnax maintains his readiness with a hooded expression. Trickle, however, shifts uncomfortably.

"She might have a point, Sir Tristan," he begins hesitantly. As the rogue talks he gains in confidence and becomes more animated. "Here in the courtyard we could be surrounded on all sides. Waves and waves of black spiders pouring over the walls, fangs dripping with venom and malice! Could be quite fun, errr... dangerous." He hopes Hawthorne appreciates the wave description, it took him all of half a second to think it up. "Some more easily defended place would be better, maybe? Where we could fall back to a place of, well, more safety than here. Say, the steps of the keep?"

"Alas, I wasn't looking forward to climbing, but if the gatehouse and crumbling wall both are web-ridden, and those trees less so, those of us without wings may have to shin up them like children hiding from their tutors. I beg you, don't laugh; it's been ages since I've climbed," Hawthorne says, and begins to circle towards the trees, away from the webs.

"Whyever would we want to climb a tree?" Trickle looks baffled as he asks his question. "Look, we're here to take care of business which is finding treasure." He glances over at Tristan. "By which I mean the scabbard, for Lord Pemberton, and that's most likely to be in the Keep. It's not that hard. Watch."

Trickle starts picking his way through the webs to the Keep. At one point he brushes one causing the strand to thrum and he pauses, holding himself still as a statue until the vibrations stop. After the threat of danger has passed he continues on until he reaches the steps of the Keep. He makes an exaggerated bow then waves his arm in the manner of making a presentation of offering the course to his comrades in arms.

Khirynnax sighs. Why do humans have to be so contrary?

[sblock=OOC]Unless I'm missing something I don't see the point of climbing the trees.

Day 6, around midday, the steps of the Keep in Castle Brockendale

You cross the courtyard to the steps of the Keep. Ahead of you, a pair of broken doors swing loosely on their hinges. Beyond them a large hall.

Behind you, half a dozen spiders have emerged from their hiding places in the buildings that line the walls and now stalk towards you. The stairs, and the Keep and its wings, are mostly free of webs. There are a few old dusty ones clinging to parts of the walls. They don't like the Keep for sure, but whether you are safe from them on the front steps, well, you only have to hang around if you wish to find out.

[sblock=OOC]It took me over an hour to configure the scanner to work with the computer, which is all the time I have at the moment. Not sure what the issue is, but for now I have a work around. Basic mud-map attached. Note the open area between the webs and the Keep is smaller than the map indicates. Its just less webby.

Anyway, to move things along I pushed the characters across the courtyard to the steps. I hope no one objects.[/sblock]
