Brinestump Marsh

The path twists and turns as it goes. Along the way you must cross bridges that span the waterways. Each bridge is made of moss covered soggy wood with the occasional plank missing. Although they look treacherous upon first glance, each one ends up being quite sturdy and safe to pass. Just after crossing the second such bridge Suldrel spots something odd just off the path. There in the mud is a soggy three-toed footprint slowly filling up with water as if whatever made the print only recently passed by.

Jariah was only half listening to the banter going on around her. She thought it rather ironic that one of them had decided to chastise her and Wireth for coming out here alone, yet instead of paying attention to their surrounding they were talking about wooing Ameiko and other advice on mating. She stayed out of the conversation.

Jakira on the other hand was getting distracted. Mainly because he did not understand half of what they were talking about and his mistress was not privately explaining things.

He asked, "What's this wooing? Don't ya juss come up behind an' stick it in? That's tha way norrrmal crrreaturrres do mating."

Sachiko looked down at Jakira and pointed at the cat-thing's fuzzy muzzle.

"What," she demanded, "would you know about normal creatures? You are not a normal creature, as adorable as you are....aw, I can't stay mad at you..."

Sachi hunkered down and reached out to start scratching and rubbing Jakira behind his ears.

Suldrel raises his hand to stop the banter for a moment. "There is a footprint here," he whispers. "Fresh. Very. Whatever it is has three toes. Keep on your guard." The elf grips his spear and cautiously lowers the point to a defensive angle.

Elsbeth

As the group trudged through the swamp, Elsbeth couldn't help but overhear some of the conversation Fastus and Sachiko were having. She heard her own name mentioned a couple of times but much of the conversation seemed to revolve around how Fastus could woo Ameiko. Elsbeth forced herself to not turn around and face them. Instead she continued facing ahead with occasional glances to the side watching for anything threatening.

"Uh..." Fastus looked somewhat nervously from the orc to the (now purring?) panther, to pretty much everybody else now looking their way. "Let's talk about this later, ok?"

Leaning down and voice lowered (for what privacy they could get at this point), but no less intense for it: "And I am NOT interested in any other woman, Sachi," he desperately stated.

And never mind what all that blushing had been about just now!

When Suldrel announced his discovery, Fastus had the extreme bad grace to actually look relieved: he immediately trotted up to -ah- have his own look at the print, right?

This move, in other circles, was also known as 'running away'.

He did cast a hesitant look Elbeth's way as he passed, but she just wouldn't look at him <correct me if I err, Graybeard :)>. Burn it, Elli!

"What is it?" Fastus asked Suldrel when he got there, in the same whispered tones the elf had just used. He'd unslung his blank-faced shield as he came up -- with some difficulty, as it turned out: the burning thing had gotten caught on a pack buckle and just - wouldn't - let - go! and now crouched down to lay his free hand delicately besides the track because - well that's what trackers do, right?

"A... bird? Or maybe a cockatrice?" He couldn't even really see the thing! Was it this muddy gash and that puddle here, or maybe that bumpy bit there was the toes or something?

Jakira was slightly indignant at being called ignorant of normal creatures, but the friendly contact placated him nearly immediately. Still he replied, "Oh, I've seen many crrreatures rrrut. Horrrses... dogs... an' cats, of courrrse. But not snakes. Not sure how they do it."

Jariah took a look at the footprint and then stepped back to let others examine it further. She had no clue what might have made it.

"Halflings do not normally have three toes like that. What about goblins? Does anyone recognize it?"

Sachiko is wrested from her sudden far-away look as she tried to figure out just how snakes did do it by Jariah's question.

She went over to hunker down and peer at the footprint, then dabbed her finger at it and tasted its tip.

"It's some kind of monster," Sachiko reported with melodramatic grimness. "Two...three day old."

At Suldrel's look her mouth split into a wide grin. "What?" she asked defensively. "It's probably just an alligator or something. Stay away from shallow water and we'll be fiiiine."

Wireth Norin, half-orc falconer

Wireth actually felt a momentary relief at Sachiko's frown; he'd been worried there was only optimism in that energetic, small frame. Of course, if she put as much energy into her anger as she did her humor, Wireth imagined he should probably encourage the latter.

The half-orc cocked his head to one side at Faustus's question, and started to answer when Suldrel's sharp eyes caught sight of the footprint.

Wireth eagerly dropped the 'banter and getting to know you' to take a look.

Fastus backed away to let the big orc close.

"Those Tian dragon-snake things have bird-feet, right?" he helpfully supplied, turning his eager attention towards the far side of the swamp road instead, wondering what horrible monster would (hopefully) lumber out to attack them...
