D&D 5E (IC) Scourge of Daggerford

Angis Honack
Dwarven tower
Evening
Round 0

“Nae way o’ knowin’ if they’re comin’ ‘ere,” Angis replied. “Those looked like cookfires, which they’re wisely puttin’ oot. If they’re oot in the forest, though, an’ no’ their caves, then they’re gaein’ somewhere. Leave yer goblin evidence, but let’s no’ fire the tower an’ draw their attention. We cuild ‘unker doon ‘ere, but I’d rather no’ face an orc ‘ost, tower or nae.”

Dandin nodded to the sage advice. After a moment of consideration, he took the flag and after everyone was out and ready to go, tacked it crudely across the main entrance to the structure with some spare bugbear daggers. Hopefully the orcs would see this as a challenge. When they got around to looking for their missing band. Task done, he climbed onto his bench, pulled out an apple and took the reigns.
"Shall we?"

Angis felt confident that the Orcs were far enough away that they could slip off the road and travel eastward without being seen. Orcs generally preferred to travel by night, and it was likely that the smoke he'd seen was the sign of them making camp for the day. If these orcs were on the way to the tower, they would probably not arrive before dusk, in spite of being no more than a few miles away. Their watch would almost certainly spot Dandin's planned fire, though. They would almost definitely send a group to investigate.

The cart would be fine off the road in the hills as long as nothing broke (it was only a little cart, after all, and the group would be following old trails.) It seemed unlikely to slow them down by much over the long-term, and it would be a shame to leave all those axes behind.

Angis Honack
Trail to Julkoun
Morning
Round 0

Once everyone was prepared, Angis led them off down the road. The smoke disappeared soon enough on the morning breeze, so it was up to eyes and ears to keep alert for possible orc scouts. They reached the turn off soon enough, and Angis chopped a path through the brush to get onto an old trail he knew leading toward Julkoun.

Angis led the group off of the road and through the hills. Once through the scrub that lined the old road, the hills were relatively light in vegetation. Dandin's little cart rattled over the hard, uneven ground, occasionally striking a loose stone and lurching to one side or the other.

OOC: Dandin should give me a... I'm going to say Wisdom (vehicle: land) check. Meanwhile, let's get everyone involved by having anyone who wants to keep an eye out for trouble give me a Wis (Perception), Angis give me a Wis (Survival) check to keep the correct path. Anyone who wants to help Dandin or Angis can just roll a d20 to provide Advantage (Help Action) which I'll add to whatever they roll if it's needed. Feel free to come up with any other task/check you like while travelling along. This is going to represent about 4 hours, or half your planned march for the day.

Tommi is walking beside the cart. He's not carrying much, and it's good for his lungs. His right hand hlds the bridle of the creature pulling the cart and he's trying to remember a tune he once heard Sherlen sing, though she didn't know he was listening.

He's keeping an eye out, sure, but not very well.

OOC: Perception [roll0].

OOC: Cart(wis): [roll0]

Dandin did his best to pick out the best path to take while keeping a steady pace. He felt that he was doing a reasonably good job at not fouling his wheels up. His only regret was that the work took all of his concentration which left him no time for apple eating, nor for keeping a lookout.

Angis Honack
Trail to Julkoun
Morning
Round 0

Angis had to rely on the others to keep watch as he kept his eye on the trail, picking a way in the general right direction that the cart could take. They could have gone straighter without the cart, but he admitted it might come in handy later

Angis led the group over best trails he could find in the rough terrain while Tommi stayed ahead of the cart and Dandin drove. The rest of the group trailed along behind. Eventually they came to a steep incline heading down into a lush, but relatively young forest. Angis had heard of the place, called Laughing Hollow. On his left, to the north, the entire side of Mount Illefarn was cut in enormous layered tiers. This was once the site of a vast quarry, where the Ironeater Dwarves had mined stone, iron, and gold for a thousand years or more.

The forest had grown up in the two hundred years since they had abandoned the mountains. It was rumoured to be the home to fey. There were many roads down into the hollow, where the dwarves had long ago hauled carts full of ore out of the quarry. The journey would take them into the hollow, and out the other side. Then they would leave the hills and return to farm country as they approached Julkoun.
