D&D 5E (IC) Scourge of Daggerford

The door behind the wine-rack opened, revealing an old brick-lined hallway that went off into darkness. (Oh-six had reduced his light so as not so easily reveal their presence to anyone who might be further away). An odor wafted its way out of the space that smelled of damp and decay. To Morgan, even as far away as the top of the stairs, the smell held the unmistakable tinge of necromancy.

Tommi nods at Lionel, grateful that he's come downstairs as well. Oh-Six whizzes up past Lionel and he soon hears, at the top of the stairs, a TWEE-oo-WHHET from Oh Six, summoning the others.

The odor from behind the wine rack is foul, and for a moment Tommi feels he wants to retch. His stomach settles and he peers within, carefully making his way along the corridor within.

OOC: Move up to 30', Gutter out, Stealth 1d20+8=22.

Morgan quietly moves down the stairs and whispers to those who are nearby,

“I can secure this door if things get too hectic. We can retreat back through, if need be and the enemy will have a heck of a time trying to get through.”

He waits to cast, wanting to see what Tommi finds.

He curses himself for not having the Darkvision spell, I guess transmutation has its benefits. I should have listened to Delphen.

Will cast arcane lock if it seems safe enough

The hallway turned to the right, and Tommi peeked around it, careful to remain near the cover of the corner. It continued onward, and then came to an open chamber littered with debris. The chamber was smokey and dimly lit by two hanging braziers. In the light of them, Tommi could make out the mangiest-looking gnoll that he'd ever seen, who was mumbling to himself in a guttural grumble frequently interrupted by long high-pitched wheezes. The gnoll lifted the mangled corpse of a wolf as he came to a ritualistic crescendo. The wolves eyes began to glow and it stood for itself on unsteady feet. The gnoll cackled and nodded to himself as if he had just performed the cleverest feat imaginable.

"If only I'd arrived a few seconds before, thinks Tommi, cursing to himself. He knows that he loathes this creature, even though he doesn't understand it.

Tommi sees Lionel in the corridor with his crossbow, and hopes that the gnoll's evil cackling distracts it from noticing the sound of his friend. Tommi tastes the power of necromancy in the air, not knowing that ozone is a byproduct of so much magic.

Tommi takes his fingers from his lips, and with his fingers, signals to Lionel that he is going to move in so that Lionel can catch the target distracted. The practiced signs among rogues, taught to the two of them at the same time when they were boys and Tommi's mother was in her workshop, are clearly understood, even though Lionel has yet to see the target.

When he's close, Tommi lunges forward, past the foul, animated thing the gnoll has just created, and up to the gnoll.

He stabs with Gutter, but in his excitement he is unable to make a solid connection. That's fine, he thinks. The gnoll is looking at me, and not Lionel.

OOC: Okay, I'm hoping for a surprise round here, and hoping it might accomplish something.
I've suggested a silent Thieves' cant for communication with Lionel.

Move as needed up to the gnoll (30', or if it's further away, he can use his bonus action and Dash.)
Attack with Gutter. 1d20+6=13. Probably a miss, but if not then 1d6+3=6 points damage.
This means Tommi's presence can let Lionel Sneak attack, possibly in this round.

If it is a surprise, there will be no response (and no shield spell!). If not, Tommi's staying there even if he has movement left. He's keeping his reaction:
  • if it's not a surprise, and someone hits him, he can half the damage.
  • if it is a surprise, or if it's not and he's not hit, he has the option to skirmish himself up to 15' away after the enemy turn (assuming Lionel has had his shot).
