If I were a grognard....

I'm asking for advice from people who have rejected an edition of dungeons and dragons before. What was your experience with that choice? Did you feel like you handled it well? Did it have particular positive or negative impacts on your gaming? Was it liberating? Did you feel left behind? Did you feel old?

I'm asking because I'm not really considering going ahead with adopting 4e, but I'm rather concerned about the issues raised above.

Not only have I rejected versions of the game, I've rejected the game. I went on to play other games that were fun. It almost sounds like you are expecting rejecting 4e to be a big deal. It's just a personal choice, nothing more. Who would you be left behind by? Unless if the rest of the group is going 4e and you are not thus they are leaving you behind, I'm not sure who else could be leaving you behind. Rejecting a game is not liberating, it is just a game. You've obviously rejected many other games since you aren't playing them, do you feel liberated by those choices?

I agree with Crothian; we're talking about a fun game, not a lifestyle choice here. The best reason I can think of to change from a loved game system is when you're having trouble finding players for it.

There may be a time when you have trouble finding 3.5 players, but it won't be right away. I would fret too much about this decision.

Nonsense!

That's why we have kids. :D

(If I can't find players - I'll make them!)

I "rejected" 2E. I liked the way it was and if I didn't like something (the assassins death table) I didn't use it. However, I went on to other games, such as Palladium, Champions, whatever.

It wasn't until The Complete Psionicist and Dark Sun that I started playing 2E, but we still mixed in 1E, like the thief-acrobat.

I didn't miss it. I didn't rant about the change, just moved on. Now I have ranted about the change of 3.0 to 3.5 but I suspect that wont be the case for 4E. Mostly because I'm resigned to the idea that gamers and the market will be split. I will play both, I have no choice if I want to play with certain friends, and on the other hand I refuse to obsolete my d20 collection just because the 800 pound gorilla is throwing a new edition at me.

Speak for yourself. I tried to leave it and it wouldn't let me go. Seriously.

Before last fall, I hadn't done any gaming of any kind other than computers games for a year and a half. Then last November one of my best friends comes back into town to live and convinces me to start up a game. So I do. Shortly thereafter my day job self destructed through no fault of my own and I found that my only marketable skill was writing. The economy where I live is a joke, so my only option is to look outside of the local economy. But now that I've accepted my lot in life, I'm cool with it. Things are working out better than I had imagined, I have projects lined up for a good long while and lots of very good prospects on the horizon.

I have never been in this situation with DnD but I have with Shadowrun. I tried 4E hated it and won't play it. I did feel liberated because I was not having fun and realizing this and just saying no this is not the game for me was a relief.

Up until then I had been trying to make myself like it.

I have friends who play 2E DnD they never switched to 3E yes it harder to find players but not impossible. One thing they did was to pick up cheap copies of the player's handbook to loan to people who wanted to play but did not have the book.

I will admit I am a little worried about being left behind if I don't make the switch to 4E but then I remind myself that there are stll forums for earlier editions of Shadowrun and DnD and I am sure that there will be enough people not switching for there to be forums for people still playing 3.5

Well, I've had stretches of many years in which I didn't play D&D at all. We went off and played Marvel Superheroes, or Shadowrun, or something else.

You're talking about choosing not to play a game. It isn't like moving to California and leaving all your friends behind, or anything.

I rejected 2E as well. No big deal. I still played 1E, and a bunch of Palladium, and a bit of this and that. Even played a few sessions of 2E because a friend asked me to.
