Our Wizard cant make his mind up (he's new to playing wizards) If you were a 12th Wizard what would you buy/make? My character is a Monk with Vow of Poverty-I didnt have this problem...

As someone else mentioned, the DM should force the Wizard to pay for his spells as well.

That IS an expense which other classes do not have.

Headband of Intellect +6, 36k.
Thingmijig of Constitution +6, 36k.
2 Rings of Wizardry, (3rd & 4th level spells).
If there's any change then I'd suggest as many different minor items such as bracers of armour, wands, (Magic Missile, Mr E's Black Tentacles, Haste), etc.

You may want to check the price on those two Rings of Wizardry and then suggest again. Earlier in this thread, I've been over how the Rings are not very gold-efficient for spells-slots provided, and then suggested the RoWII or III as the one to buy, if any.

A Wizard staff.....with a knob on the end!

Oh and a crystal ball for the good old Scry'n'fry and a pointy hat and a cat

Broomsticks are optional

Absolutely.

Sir Thorncrest, your DM is really out of whack here. The DMG has wealth guidelines for PCs -- at 12th level the wealth should be 88,000gp. Your PCs are starting with 227% of the normal wealth! I suppose you all start with a 46 point buy for stats too. ......?

Wealth is a direct measure of character power in 3.5e D&D. More wealth equals more power; easy enough. You will be carrying the wealth of a 15th level PC, and that is significant. Just so you know.

Moreover, I'm guessing your DM is not requiring your wizard to buy spells. That's too bad...and badly out of whack. Spells are also measured by wealth; 100gp per spell level, just for scribing costs, not to mention either the value of a captured spellbook, or the scribing of a scroll, or the scribing directly out of a friendly NPCs spell book......it all costs money.

And this bit about "extra money" for spell casters 'cause they can make their own magic items". Wha!!!!! Of course they can make them, if the have the correct feats and they spend the XP. I'll bet dollars to doughnuts your spell casters don't take the item creation feats after all.

I agree with Nail and others. The DM should give everyone the same amount of cash and if the wizards want to spend all their feats on item creation in order to "double their money" that's their business. I'm currently playing a fighter/wizard/eldritch knight (created at 10th level) who did exactly that. He hammered out his own weapons and wondrous items using his starting wealth, paying full price for the things he couldn't craft himself. This is an appropriate trade-off for the price of two feats. But I was sure to be careful to buy scrolls to give me the spellbook I need to craft all my items. I never cast lightning bolt (my save DCs and spell resistance checks are pretty low), but I have it in my book so I could craft a shock weapon.

Even if you're playing in a deliberately over-equipped campaign, you should be equally over-equipped!

Thorncest

HMM

I might suggest that my friend play a Sorcerer instead -- its much simpler

My choices for either would be

a couple of wands

scroll with utility spells like Knock

defensive items (bracers amulet for saves etc)

stat boost items for your casting stats

For a wizard

More spells

Boccobs Blessed book (or 2)

I'd personally go for:

a +intelligence item (36K headband +6)
a metamagic rod (maximise lesser) x3 52K

that's 88K, leaving 112,000

the rest in pearls of power for huge numbers of spells possible up to 3rd level. You can only use each rod 3/day but having 3 you get 9/day. Of course you can get more pearls for other levels if you wish.

Since each pearl costs the following for each level 1K/4K/9K/16K/25K/36K you could essentially cast 9 maximised magic missiles per day without much effort, even more if you buy more rods.

Why bother with this cheesy tactic? Magic missile is automatic hit, spell resistance can still counter it, but you are casting the spell, so take feats to bypass spell resistance.

So that's a guaranteed 25 points of damage per spell 9 times ... and then you have your normal spell allotment.

You could even go as far as buying only 10 pearls of power 1st level for 10K, leaving 102,000 for other stuff like fortification clothes.

Or the enemy could, I don't know, cast the 1st-level spell Shield?

Well of course I was using magic missile as an example ... make it fireball, or melf's acid arrow or something.

Whatever takes your fancy.
