D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Fighters also had the interesting choice of becoming nearly unhittable even at low levels by putting their second highest stat in dexterity instead of Con.
Plate + shield + 17 dex = AC -1, and you get effective two-weapon fighting as a bonus.

Figured that out in 2E. We had a dual wielding fighter solo a lich, dragon and marilith one after the other 1 per round.
. Fighter saves they shrugged off save or sucks and AC was 27 or 28 in modern rules.

"But while the melee bonuses were great, this also had a massive impact on your ability to carry stuff and open doors (and bend bars, but that's neither here nor there)."

You forgot lift gates! Lol

By default if you didn't roll terrible.

Cleric could get similar Defenses as a bad roll Fighter but their offense was trash.

Assassin was the option. Same offense. Bad defenses.

I was thinking buff spels.

Played this year and some had 17 strength or 18 but not fighters.

Transmuted cast strength on them essentially bring them close enough to the 18/XYZ players.

How were y'all rolling stats in the day? I only started playing in 2e, but we weren't rolling 4d6KH1 and assign- it was near unheard of to get an 18 strength at our tables at character generation, so if you're not picking fighter because you didn't roll an 18... that's unfortunate. But remember that gauntlets of ogre power, potions, etc. were absolutely a thing- you could raise your stats with magic! Just had to survive to see that stuff :'D

4d6 drop the lowest.

Saw a lot of 4d6 drop the lowest roll until you get what you want.
