D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Are they though? I know they are in modules, but probably not as much as you think. You also can’t assume every one will be found, and every one will go to the same PC out of the party. I am very dubious that enough of the ultra rare rings and bracers were available in modules to achieve an AC of -7. Certainly not before super high levels. The only times I ever saw anything close to that was in Monty haul games where DMs handed out magic items like candy.

Official adventures handed out stuff like that like candy.

Temple of Elemental Evil has +3 weapons and a frost brand you can get at level 4 or 5.

Level 3 you might have +1 shield, plate mail, sword and something like elven cloak and boots KotBL.

We were using Dungeon magazine modules. Bracers of defense, ring, cloaks, dexterity. Scimitar of speed as weapon. . I was level 12 due to funky xp table.

2E adventures toned the loot down but we're generous.

Faith's and Pantheons is 3e, though. Horus-Re did not have CG paladins in there. He had paladins, but there was nothing unusual about them.

The CG paladins as specialty priests is a 2e convention from Legends and Lore.

It has a flame tongue, two staffs of striking, multiple suits of magic armor, a couple intelligent swords .....

We got so much loot from TOEE that we were hauling it around in a portable hole and when we freed some 20 or so slaves from the underdark in a later adventure we gave over half of them magic armor or a magic weapon so they could fight if they came across a patrol in the underdark on their way out.

I am playing Bone Hill right now, using the original 1E module updated for 5E. We are level 4 and I have a Brooch of Shielding, Wand of Fear, Shield +1, Plate Mail, Flail +1, Dagger +1 and ring of feather falling and I probably have the least magic of any of the PCs.

Our Cleric is rocking chainmail +1, a shield +1, A magic Battleaxe (+1 I think?), a Ring of Protection, Cloak of Protection, Gauntlets of Ogre Power

Our Barbarian has a Ring of Protection, +1 Shield, +1 Scale Mail, +1 Longsword, Horn of Valhala

Our Rogue has a Ring of Protection, Ring of Invisibility, +1 Rapier, +1 Shortbow, Wand of Magic Missiles

We did some of the B and X series. Lots loot.

Sorry Powers and Pantheons
Okay. I just looked there and it gets more involved with the specialty priests, giving them more detailed abilities and dogma, but still no ability to ignore the LG requirement of a holy sword. It did however allow for LG or CG for the specialty priests, instead of just CG. So the LG members would be able to use holy avengers.

By themselves, bracers (which cap out at AC 2) and ring of protection (which caps out at +5) can only get you to AC -3.

To get to AC -7 requires some additional help, most likely Dex 18+. I've seen it done once, by an Illusionist in an old campaign of mine using just this setup, and she still died at every oppportunity mostly because her overall luck was awful.

17 or 18 dex.

May have been a cloak Orlando protection or a shield in there.

I've run and played Bone Hill several times and don't remember there being any Gauntlets of Ogre Power in there. Did those come from somewhere else?
