D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Am I incorrect in reading that some folks mean players would refuse to play characters who risk themselves to save others?

In the real world, I’d call risking your life to save others heroism. Like the unofficial Coast Guard motto: “You have to go out, but you don’t have to come back.” And the ethos of firefighters and combat medics.

I thought simulating heroism and adventure were the point of D&D?
You are incorrect in that reading. The problem isn't with characters risking their lives. It's with a character who is just about healing others. That's pretty boring for most people. Most people want to risk their characters' lives while hacking down enemies, throwing fireballs, stabbing enemies in the back, etc.
  • An actual real-life surgeon playing a cleric. Art initiates life.
I new theory on the origin of life! I like this one better than primordial sludge.
  • A tax accountant playing a cleric. No clue why yet. :)
Maybe he wants to see which is greater, god or taxes. :P

I don't even remember that.

I think I had a player fomb through Faith's and Avatars and P&P to find it.

Played 2E recently. 2 SP and a Crusader picked.
It was in Legends and Lore in the Egyptian deity section.

Edit: Found it.

"Priests of Horus are, like the god’s avatar himself, paladins. Unlike the traditional characters of this class as described in the Player’s Handbook, they are only of chaotic good alignment. Thus, they are not bound by the normal restriction against chaotic behavior by paladins. Further, they cast spells as priests (not as paladins), but only gain the ability to turn undead upon reaching fifth level.

Requirements: AB as paladin; AL cg; WP any; AR a; SP all, combat, guardian, healing’, necromantic, protection, sun; PW see above; TU special."

Nothing there exempting them from a holy avenger's LG requirement. It only exempts them of restrictions on acting chaotic.

No, they aren't really common. Just look at rings. You've only got a 4% chance of getting a ring, then a 15% chance of having it a protection ring, then a 15% chance of getting anything better than a +2*. The chances are extremely small. Bracers aren't any better (2%, then 19% of that 2%, then 20% of that to get anything decent). And then you have to convince the rest of the party that you should get all of these.

Meanwhile, the cleric is rocking plate and shield quickly that doesn't need to be magical at all.

* out of 1000 random magic items, 40 are rings. 6 are protection rings. Only 1 is +3 or better. 1 out of 1000 isn't exactly what I'd call common.
Caveat: if you play official adventures instead of using the tables, Rings of Protection are all over the place.

Are they though? I know they are in modules, but probably not as much as you think. You also can’t assume every one will be found, and every one will go to the same PC out of the party. I am very dubious that enough of the ultra rare rings and bracers were available in modules to achieve an AC of -7. Certainly not before super high levels. The only times I ever saw anything close to that was in Monty haul games where DMs handed out magic items like candy.

I used the Faith's and Pantheons version.
