Immobilized?

Um, is there a faq somewhere on just what 'immobile' entails?

I THINK it means you are denied Dex bonus, but this is not actually stated.

So, for example, a pinned character is immobile. Says that in many places. Does not actually define 'immobile' in PHB or DMG, as far as I can see.

Help?

I think it just means that you cannot move. For example, when grappling, "pinned" is the specific condition that causes someone to lose the Dex bonus to AC and otherwise suffer +4 to be hit in melee. Can you find a use of "immobile" that fails to be in conjunction with some other specific condition (paralyzed, petrified, pinned, etc.)?

Hi!

This is from Rules of the Game: All about Sneak Attacks (3.5) by Skip Williams (WotC):

IMMOBILIZED

When you can’t move, you can’t use your Dexterity bonus (if any) to Armor Class, and you can be sneak attacked even when you’re not flanked or caught flat-footed.

Any of these conditions keep you from using your Dexterity bonus to Armor Class: grappled, held, helpless, incapacitated, pinned, or stunned. Immobility is one time when the uncanny dodge ability doesn’t foil a sneak attack (see the section on uncanny dodge).

Grappling is worth a special note. When you’re grappling, you lose your Dexterity bonus to Armor Class (if any) against any foe that you are not grappling, and that’s true no matter who started the grapple -- you’re just as vulnerable if you initiate a grapple as you are when a foe grapples you. You retain your Dexterity bonus to Armor Class, however, against a foe you are grappling. So, if someone grabs you, you can’t sneak attack that foe, but your buddies could.

When you’re climbing (ascending or descending a vertical surface or a slope too steep to walk up) you cannot use your Dexterity bonus to Armor Class, which makes you vulnerable to sneak attacks (even if you have uncanny dodge). Being entangled impedes your movement and reduces your effective Dexterity score, but it does not make you vulnerable to sneak attacks.

Kind regards

AAARGH! And Skip manages to fail to say, perhaps, that 'Pin, on the other hand, you loose Dex for anyone, including the guy pinning you'

(bangs his head)

Grapple is specific: You loose Dex to AC for anyone not in the grapple.
Pin is vague: You are 'immobile' and at -4 AC.

Thoughts?

(a) Ah, spell checking posts, how nice.
(b) Well, I'm playing 3.5, but at least you got me looking at tables and I found in table 8-6 'Character's Dex is effectively 0'. That and -4 AC means a base AC of 1. Then armor. Yowza.

So I forgive your pedantry, thank you.
