Info on Hero Points

Here's my system:

PC's get one hero point per level. Once used, they're gone.

A hero point may be used to:

1. Guarantee success on one die roll. Use of a hero point must be declared before a die is rolled. If used, the result is treated as a natural 20. For an attack roll, this automatically threatens a critical, but the critical must be conformed with a second roll.

2. Stabilize a dying character.

3. If a character is hit for enough damage that he/she goes from positive hp to dead, a hero point may be spent to restore the character to -1 hp, at which point the character is unconscious and dying.

Basically, it's a PC safety net, plus a chance to guarantee an extremely heroic act. Most of the hero points used have been to guarantee success on an attack roll against the BBEG.

at the end of each session, we allow the players and the gm to hand out one hero point to the player they think contributed the most to the game. (sort of a role-playing flavor reward most of the time, but sometimes used for things like "cool idea" or the creation of a cool rpg situation.) it's all done secret ballot style.

each point is a 10% exp bonus.

we love it.

Where are the Hero Points for bringing munchies to the game? (: I remember someone posting that that really worked well, lol.

You know, the more I think about it, the more I think that's a really cool idea to give out Hero Points. It makes it valuable (one a session), makes the rewarded player feel special, and strives to make the other players try harder to gain the point next session by RPing harder.
