Is anyone actually playing Modern?

Guys, I'm interested in hearing your experiences in finding a group to play d20 Modern. The current gaming group I'm in is playing D&D, but they're interested in trying out Gamma World (d20) in the new year. But next summer my wife and I are moving and I'm wondering if I should just dust off my D&D books or if it's realistic to think I can get some Modern action. :D Even comparing the traffic on this board to the D&D groups, it seems like there are FAAAAR fewer Modernites out there than D&Ders.

How few of us are there?

There are far fewer of everyone out there than D&Ders -- don't use that as your basis of comparison, or you'll never play anything but D&D.

I'm hoping to get a Modern game going early in the new year. I have the group, it's just down to scheduling now.

My players are happy. d20 Modern was an easier sell than some other system, because they already knew D&D 3.0. My players are guys in their mid-twenties who have jobs and lives -- they don't have a ton of time to learn a new game. But saying, "Right, D&D with these characters" was very easy.

Currently playing two D&D games and one d20 Modern game. :D

I'm finding it a bit tough to find a modern game, and so I'm thinking about starting one, however, I'm not finding many fish to take the bait.

*shrugs*

On another note, is anyone else kinda bummed that they lumped modern into star wars and the ogl games? Maybe 'cause I wanted more traffic, and in theory this would do that, but I wanted/hoped for more modern traffic.

c'est la vie

I'd love for Modern to have the traffic to make having its own thread worthwhile, but really, the place was dead. I tried to stir the pot on occasion, and every few months we'd kick around with complaints about guns versus melee weapons or how nonlethal damage works, but I'm cool with consolidating forums to generate more activity.

Bummer to hear that so few people are interested in trying it. See, for me, the "Generic Adventuring Toolkit" was a great sell. I knew that I wanted a bunch of different games, I knew that I'd be homebrewing, and I didn't want to have to go through the trouble of taking out old fluff and putting new fluff in. I wanted a fluff-free crunchy ruleset for me to fluff up on my own.

Er, so to speak. :)

Sorry. Didn't mean to be vague. Was trying to refer to fact that d20 Modern was billed as a toolkit for playing any number of games, rather than a ready-made campaign. Someone voiced annoyance that d20 Modern wasn't ready for them to play, because they had to build a world. For me, that was a good thing...

And to those who grump that they need to build a world I say: Go down to the library and read up on your local history. Read the newspaper. Buy a map of the local area. You've got the most detailed campaign world imaginable - the real one.

Sure, it might mean that you have to come up with your own flavor text, but it's soooo much fun when you realize the zombie-filled house the DM is describing is the one you're actually sitting in at the time. Augh! Goose bumps (especially when you play in the basement of said house :))!

I'm running a d20 Modern campaign right now, actually. It's going VERY well and everyone involved is having an absolute blast. We've had no issues with the rules, classes, etc. The group's level 3 now. What's also really cool is that we're using it as a sort of rethinking of an old D&D campaign we played wherein demons tried to invade the Forgotten Realms. They get the added appeal of familiar characters with a new spin, as well as being able to play a modern-day campaign. :)
