Journeyman base class in Dungeonscape?

I think this sounds a bit stupid for a base class.

It just doesn't sound like enough of an Archetype to merit a base class. A "Journeyman" is traditonally (and historically) a newly-minted craftsman of some type--fresh out of his apprenticeship--going from town to town working for various masters to expose himself to different craft skills.

A "Secret Door Finder" who can "Cope with anything a Dungeon throws at him" sounds like one of two things...

1) A character class designed to fill the niches of all the other base classes, or...

2) A non-intuitive mish-mash of nonsense designed to specifically overcome problems unique to dungeon adventures.

Neither of them sound good to me.

D&D hasn't been about fantasy fiction archetypes for some time now. In D&D reality, people going down into holes in the earth and risking their life to rob some ancient site of treasure they'll sell at the local flea market is an archetype.

Good point

I am pessimistic about the proposed class as well, but open enough to wait until I can get a look at it to really bash the idea yet.

Hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised.

3) An excuse to sell YET ANOTHER base class. :\

I wouldn't mind a jack of all trades class to the tune of the one in the Black Company. The BC JoT does, to my mind, fill a niche in fantasy fiction under-served in the game. But from the sounds of it, the journeyman is another overly specific class we don't need.

I hope I'm wrong.

That would be interesting...someone with a nice skill set like a rogue without the sneak attack ability. I never saw Indiana Jones stab anybody in the back necessarily.

You could always use the martial rogue variant in UA. You dump the sneak attack and pick up the fighter's bonus feat progression.

Thanks,
Rich

I'd like to see a jack of all trades that isn't a Bard. :D

I have one in the works (3 versions in playtest.) It may be my first published D20 piece. Just need to find the time to wrap it up.

Thanks,
Rich
