Jump Back ... why?

How does "jump back" come into play? If there is supposed to be no more facing, there is no "back" towards which to jump. I can possibly see very specific instances in which a DM could rule a character can't turn ... but even then, that would almost appear to be a house ruling as characters are supposed to be able to "turn" for free.

Aside from DM-ruled instances, is there any reason I really shoudn't ignore the "jump back" and simply use "standing jump" for such checks? Thanks.

I wonder if "jump back" is in there in case you want to jump backwards and fire your crossbow, or something like that. Can you combine those two actions anyway? It's never come up in my games.
