Great re-cap. Just as a sidenote, Luthor was cloning Doomsday on the moon (and the thing almost killed Steel). Luthor sent Superman and Doomsday against Imperiex, who disintegrated D-Day.
When next we see Doomsday, it's at the White House, battling Superman in front of Luthor (this is after the war is over). As a big surprise, D-Day developed intelligence. As a result of that, Superman says that now that D-Day has self-awareness, he has developed a inherently fatal flaw: self-preservation. Now that D-Day isn't mindless, Superman can actually outthink him, and is thus no longer afraid of that mindless killing machine that had caused his death.
