I believe they are stylized anvils with superimposed hammers.
Yeah, that's what I assumed they were supposed to be. But there? That's just plain and simple stupid. When are these people going to learn how armor actually works? And weapons. It isn't as though they haven't been told often enough. And no, I do not accept 'artistic license' as an excuse. Either learn how to do it right, or don't do it at all! (But to give the artist his due, I didn't even think about the Dwarf not wearing a helmet.)

What are you the Ebenezar Scrooge of D&D? It is a fantasy roleplaying game, my friend.

[Old man voice] Yes, and get off my lawn! [Old man voice] The question is, why do they refuse to do it right when there are plenty of reference works to look at. In fact, this guy obviously knows what he's doing, so why do it wrong deliberately? As someone said, fantasy (and science fiction) need to seem more realistic than normal forms of fiction for people to believe in them. In my (not so humble) opinion, they're just shooting themselves in the foot by having impossible to believe in artwork. On the other hand, I suppose that if only a handful of us actually care about such things, which, unfortunately, seems to be the case, then it isn't hurting them at all. Darn it!

I was debating starting a different thread to discuss about the dwarf art.

I really like it. Solid work. There is a weight about him. And I enjoy the small details--the axe in his boot, the skull on the end of the maul, the strand of hair that's out of place, etc.

Thaumaturge.

On the contrary: Ugh. Ridiculously oversized maul -- FAIL -- and silly armor protrusions that would actually make the armor worse -- FAIL.

Normally, I wouldn't believe any of it coming from WotC because those present at the start of an edition are often no longer on the payroll within a short time following.

However, in this case, I am more likely to believe it because they just don't have the D&D RPG staff anymore to churn out all kinds of rules supplements and revisions. It seems D&D (the RPG) is no longer going to be a continual (in house) product-producing machine after this big debut (although D&D the brand certainly seems to be something that will be growing). They have just enough staff to put out a couple of large books a year (like monster manuals and/or maybe 1-2 rulebooks) but beyond that, I'd guess there will be outsourcing of adventure/campaign material and those working on D&D could mainly be setting the direction and/or performing review of the outsourced work.

If mearls leaves though...well, bad things, man...bad things.
