D&D 5E Last bets before final playtest packet release

My money is on the 20th.

As far as what we will see, my guess is little in the way of math changes, probably just a few concept updates. The biggest and most key thing being multiclassing...as we haven't seen it at all yet.

Mearls specifically mentioned the next packet is the big math change (that many are clamouring for).

...the "math" argument has been hilarious...

I feel as though it's not that unlikely that the packet will have many large additions and significant changes. I know that it's only been a month or so since the last packet, but since the packets are not complete images of everything they have done at a particular point, it's possible that things that have been in the tank for a while will finally show up in the September packet. It's the last chance to get feedback from the playtester pool they've assembled.

On the other hand, it's possible that the large public playtest is concluding because they've determined that they've gotten what they need from it, and this final packet will be just some fleshing out, polish, optics, etc.

I haven't followed... what exactly is the "big math change" wanted?

Monster AC, Saving Throw DCs.

Mearls stated classes will get a bonus ranging from +1 at low level to +6 at high level to certain ability checks/attacks/saves, so a 20th level Fighter will get +6 to Str attacks/checks/saves, etc.

In addition to what Weather Report says above, the idea was supposed to be that DCs of spells would again scale as you went up levels. Since DCs would scale, saves would have to scale to match them. Plus, there was a desire to make skill checks get easier for higher level characters, thus a scaling check modifier.

DCs of spells would scale per their level (like 3rd Ed).

And now with the new article, its all about proficiency, if you are proficient in the long sword and chopsticks, you get + 2 (at 1st level) to +6 (at the maximum) with attacks/checks using them.
