Layout Programs: What do you use?

Now that I'm back up and running on ID/PS/IL CS (with Acrobat Pro 6), I can say that the feature set Creative Suite offers is absolutely terrific. Lyceian Arcana actually ended up in InDesign CS right at the end of my time with it, and I'm glad I made the effort to upgrade and re-authenticate the software. Just to reinforce my previous recommendation. :)

cheapers

well im poor...lol, so ill be using ms publisher 2000 and like someone suggested hear gimp, I do my own black and white art so Ill get the hang of it.

I'm pretty lacking in funds myself; the reason I get to play with the cool toys has to do with my job (I'm a desktop publisher/graphic designer/tech writer IRL).

Don't fret: Publisher 2000 and the Gimp are great tools with a lot of power that should serve you in good stead. Best of luck!

This thread piqued my interest back in November and
I, too, was looking for a cheap solution. All the good ones
listed here are in the range of $400 and up, which I can't
buy now -- maybe with the sales of the stuff I'm writing, but
not now. ;)

I looked for free stuff and saw Scribus
but didn't have Linux. However, you can get Linux on a CD on Knoppix which has Scribus and OpenOffice included!!

Then work got busy and I haven't been back to it :\, so I'm not sure how great it
is .... but it's free, supported and (looks) powerful.

For those with tight budget constraints, check out Serif's Page Plus. It's about $80 IIRC, and very powerful. I have it, but don't use it because I prefer Adobe FrameMaker - yeah, I'm quirky - but Page Plus has like 90% of the power at about 12% of the price, plus as a bonus, you don't have to climb the infamous 'Adobe Learning Cliff.'

Edit: There's a review of PagePlus 10 here on this forum. :D
