Logistics of staking a vampire?

However a vampire is not a character :P

Hehehehe ... I allow certain liberties to occur when characters come up with what I think are decently thought out plans.

The rules are sometimes too strict. A pinned character is immobile ... in my opinion immobility for the vampire in question is good enough to drive that stake in.

As for the gaseous form ... the plan works when the whole party (or those involved) ensure their initiatives are before or after the vampire's action so the vampire has no chance to interrupt.

Because obviously being immune to criticals, the vampire can't be Coup de Grace'd - so it was just a way of saying "I allow it and use this mechanic to represent it".

In d20 Modern, it works like this.
Wooden Stake: Wooden weapons that deal piercing damage (such as wooden stakes, arrows, pool cues, spear shafts, and table legs) threaten a critical hit against a vampire on a natural 20 (unless noted otherwise), even though vampires are normally immune to critical hits. A successful critical hit destroys a vampire instantly, turning it to dust.
