Looking for a LA called Feral?

After reading everything else in this thread I'm thoroughly confused.

The feral template is a +1 Level Adjust. Based on the Savage Species.
It gains extra abilities based on its Hit Dice. Also from Savage Species.
However!
According to Gestalt in the Unearthed Arcana. A player doesn't have twice the HD just because they have twice the bonuses from classes.
A 4th level human fighter/wizard - having the best traits and abilities from both fighter and wizard is still only a 4th level (and 4 HD) character.

Now, as far as my confusions, because Feral is a template applied to a species ....
Level adjust should (can't seem to find anything explicitly saying it) come off the top as you are a X level character, not a X/X level character. So, at 20th "ECL" and you have a +1 LA, then take your level - 1 and that's the max HD you get. Meaning you can be a 19fighter/19wizard not a 19fighter/20 wizard because the LA does not come off the fighter side only.

Also, I know I would never allow Feral to be inherited in my games because it seems overly silly. Even if I could get past that, I wouldn't allow it in Gestalt because LA's in Gestalt make me cry sometimes :P

I believe you may be... incorrect.. at least as far as the bonus benefits being based on how many levels of monstrous humanoid hit dice you have. I believe those benefits also apply based on level.

Hit Die
In the singular form, a die rolled to generate hit points. In the plural form, a measure of relative power that is synonymous with character level for the sake of spells, magic items, and magical effects that affect a certain number of Hit Dice (HD) of creatures.

Source: PHB

Sleep:
A sleep spell causes a magical slumber to come upon 4 Hit Dice of creatures. Creatures with the fewest HD are affected first.

If Hit Die was not synonymous with level than all lvl 1 human fighters would be immune to sleep

Based on one above forumites definition of hit dice those hit dice would not equal levels. Consequently, because a first level human fighter would have a level rather than a hit die he would not be susceptible to Sleep based on RAW, because only creatures with hit die are.

In other words, I was using that illustration to show how their view of what hit die were was wrong.

Sleep is a spell, thus its use on a fighter is covered in the bolded part. It could be said that this specific case overrules the general HD=/=level case. So by RAW fighters can be affected.

Nowhere in the PHB description does it state that templates are included, and try as I might I cannot see a way to fairly include it as such from the description. Based on this, if something like poison only affected <=# HD, for consistency I'd have to rule that it wouldn't affect a fighter 1 (not that I know of any).

To see it as such I would need Savage Species or the equivalent have the HD are synonymous with Class Level phrase somewhere.

To put it more simply, many creatures have hit dice that don't seem to equate to any class levels of any sort.

Every class level, however, always seems to include a hit die. If you look in the Fighter class description, it even specifies a Hit Die of D10 each level.

The Sleep spell, on the other hand, doesn't say how many levels it affects, since it's near impossible to firmly establish the "level" of some creatures. Their hit dice, on the other hand, are always listed.

That clear anything up?

ok, so whats feral cost, how is it applied, whats the benefits...whats your opinion on the authors intent of the template?

Feral is arguably one of the most broken templates in the game. For a +1 LA (Which evaporates quickly with buyoff) you get:

Monstrous Humanoid Type
Claw Attack
Improved Grab, Pounce, Rake, Rend (based on level)
Fast Healing from 2-5 (based on level)
Darkvision
+4 Str, -2 Dex, +2 Con, -4 Int, +2 Wis

Give this to a barb or a two weapon ranger and watch them go to town. Hell, it'd even work well with a Cleric. Note, the two weapon ranger would get to make a full attack at the end of every charge.... and because he doesn't require dex to qualify for two weapon fighting... well, you get the idea.

or to take advantage of the rend/rake ability a Druid would be just lights out, bug nuts! Dire Tiger / Dragon..........as once quoted by the hapless Leo The Lion "ahhoooole lotta lumps"

And if one wanted to be the keeper of the cheese having a wildshaping Druid with both Greenbound and Feral templates...I wonder how this would turn out??????
