There's also the fact that the actor that plays Walt is 2-3 years older than when Lost started; he's grown up quite a bit, while the show's timeline is only 60-70 days.

I bet it has a lot to do with how crappy last week's episode was and people just didn't tune in this week.

I was pleased by the episode. I liked the episode. I wanted to see more resistant by Jack, Kate and Sawyer and less screwing around, but I still thought it was a solid episode.

I'm pretty sure this has been my favorite episode of the season so far. I liked the higher-concept stuff about choice versus destiny, while getting the deal on Desmond and Penny's background.

You think actors are never on two shows at once, particularly for individual episodes, and particularly when the other conflicting show in question is likely to fail (like all new shows are likely to fail)?

They have not reached an agreement yet. They might, and they might not. I think they will, eventually, for a couple of episodes at least.
