lycanthrope ECL?

There are deifnately non-munchkin reasons to want to beomce a lycanthrope.

It is perfectly concievable that one who has some level of closeness with a particular type of animal or nature in general, (i.e. Druids, Clerics, particularly of gods of animals, hunting, the moon, etc, rangers, characters just plain obsessed with a particular animal) would intentionally get themselves inflicted with lycanthropy of said animal if that lycanthrope was of the right alignment.

This character would have to either be securely locked up or in safe hunting grounds on every full moon until he learns to control it, but its the kind of sacrifice that such a character might make.

But its so powerful!, some might complain. Yes, it is. That is why we need some system to balance it into the game.

As far as PRCs are concerned, IIRC there are PRCs related to specialty priests of Sylune and/or Malar that relate to becoming lycanthropes.

I would suggest a magical ritual that turns a character into a Natural Lycanthrope.

IMHO, an Afflicted should never be a good thing (and an Afflicted that accepts his curse should be an NPC.)

1. What benefits does the character get when in human form? (ie. DR 15/Silver, natural AC bonus, etc).

2. In the (fairly likely) event that the rest of the party decides to kill him and he has to change in self defence, will he still be able to cast his spells in hybrid form? (Invisible, hasted werewolf, ugh!)

1. None.

2. What makes you think the now evil and DM controlled npc werewolf will even cast spells/remember that it can cast spells.

I'm totally on track with Caliban, this is a curse, when in wereform the player don't get to control his PC (unless he is willing to play it as a murderous beast out to kill his former friends). In fact I had great fun with this setup for an entire campaign, since there wasn't really any divine casters able to lift the curse the players had to learn to live with it. The quest to get rid of the curse became a major theme for the game. Players being players they actually took advantage of the wereform a couple of times in battles they might not have won on their own. Essentially gambling that he would turn and then the rest of the party fled, leaving the raging werebeast to destroy and eat their enemies.

I know this thread is really old, but it's still the top google hit for "lycanthrope ecl" so thought I would offer this update.

Wizards published a mechanism for PC's to play lycanthropes in a balanced manner. For Weretiger:

(scroll past the part about Lich)

For other types, look in the article index.

Happy hunting!
