M3: Assassin's Knot (Patlin judging)

Rinaldo is able to exit the inn. He sees no one in the dark, and releases his disguise. He then drinks his potion, and sneaks back into his room and goes to bed.

Abraham holds his postion defensively eyeing the party. "This town is more dangerous than you guess. I know not the details, but there are assassins in this town. I grew up here, and I would keep it a peaceful, prosperous community. But I fear my investigations have made me a target." He sighs.

"Perhaps I must leave this place. But in any case, I suspect you are safe for tonight. I suggest you all go to bed and lock your doors. Do not travel at night. Complete your business and go."

Nurlan is visibly disturbed by Abraham's warning. "Good Mr. Abraham, if I may ask, what you say troubles me. When I returned to my room tonight I thought someone had been there -- nothing was missing, but it seemed things were not all where Mordik and I had left them. Perhaps it was just a robbery attempt which we foiled by taking our valuables with us, but now that you warn of assassins, I am deeply worried. I cannot think what business assassins would have with me in this town, as I am new here, and a travelling minstrel does not bring a trail of enemies where he goes. But I have to wonder. I realize this is a sensitive question, but could you possibly explain more of the danger?"

With everyone else crowding out into the hall to see what trouble Rinaldo has gotten himself into, Tenebrynn chooses to actually hang back. Having exited the room with the others he chooses to try and make it into his own room rather than follow the others. Back at his room doffs his travelling gear to appear more like he just woke up but had fallen asleep in his clothes. Once properly disheveled he re-emerges to the confusion a minute or two later.

Interesting. Very interesting. Maybe we could confide Abraham later... Ashnar thinks hearing the man's explanation. Having him on our side should be useful.
"Odd, that. I suppose I need to pay more attention. I'd never had thought..." he mumbles as he trots into his room.

("Eanos has no reason to doubt Abraham believes his words." - I suppose the same goes for Ashnar? Sense Motive +7)

By this time, Wilfong the gambler, and the four serving boys emerge. The shouting would seem to have been loud enough to awaken everyone, but no one else comes out.

Abraham sighs. "Nurlan, you and others had best stay out of this, lest you want another Nurlan coming into your room. If any of you want to help, and can track, then perhaps we could pursue the assassin. I wonder where that confounded Captain Basmar is. And that Oscar and Philmar. Off checking their traps, perhaps."

Abraham knocks on their doors. Their is no answer at either.

Soon afterwards, another man strides in the back door. It is the tall, dark-skinned man, dressed in black leather, wearing a black cloak with a red underside.

"Viscount" says Abraham, addressing this man. "Where have you been out at this hour, sir?"

"My business is my own." Answers the man walking to his room. There is mud on his boots.

"Did you see a man who looked like me out there?" asks Abraham

"No." The Viscount enters his room and closes the door. He is the man who took Ashnar's room the second night after you arrived.

"I realize this sounds like dangerous territory. But I am curious because I suspect I already have had a visitor in my room. Whether he looks like me I know not, but I obviously have reason to be concerned for the safety of my temporary home. As for helping, please let me know if there's anything I can do. I doubt I'd be able to follow your assailant's tracks, but I could discuss this with Mordik. I travel with him for security as much as anything else -- he's a keen watchman -- and threats to the peace of this inn definitely count as a security concern for me. Do please let us know if you'd like him to help."

"Ostensibly, I'm on Master Rinaldo's payroll for the same reason. The threat of assassins is something that definitely concerns me," Eanos adds. "Sadly, my skills don't lie in the area of tracking, but whatever other aid I may provide that doesn't impede my ability to protect my current charges, let me know."

Moving out of his room, Tenebrynn joins the growing crowd. Being near the back he asks the nearest person, who appears to be Wilfong, "What happened?" he stifles a yawn with the back of his hand. His clothes are slightly disheveled, not having taken too much time to try and make them that way.

Wilfong shrugs at Tenebrynn's question. "I dunno. Seems OK now. I'm going back to bed."

Abraham nods slowly listening to Nurlan, Ashnar and Eanos. "If you would put your life on the line for the cause of good, then perhaps there is much you could do. Are you simply wandering merchants and musicians, searching for another day's pay, or might you answer to a higher calling?"

The NPCs drift off, back to bed.

Eanos, taking a chance, but still unwilling to fully disclose the party's purpose, answers "I consider myself a truthseeker in addition to whatever work I may do to pay my way in the world. That seems to me a 'higher calling,' at least, though perhaps it's not what you mean."
