MD-VA-DC Game Day - 10/2/04: Crunch Time Approaches - Volunteers Needed!

I want to come! Oh gosh, now I'm all excited. I've lived here for so long without getting to know any gamers in my area. I'm in Reston, VA and frequent the Game Parlor on ocasion. I'm sure they'd be able to find some space to host us if we asked (if one of your other areas does not work out). I drive up to Hanover, PA every other Saturday to role play with my old group... so long as it doesn't clash with that schedule I am so in.

(1) I am not willing to DM/GM. I'm a tad shy about these things, and bedised I've been running games exclusively for 10 freaking years. I deserve to play character for a day.

(2) I'm not looking to DM/GM in the morning or the afternoon. But would be looking to play throughout the entire day if possible. :)

(3) I am willing to help organize/schedule/coordinate the game day. Just let me know here or via email, and I'm yours.

(4) I think the best location for such an event is Northern VA (but that's because I live here) .

(1) I am not willing to GM. Why? Because I suck at it.

(2) Doesn't matter to me.

(3) I am willing to help organize and plan. I think this is a really cool idea.

(4) Some people suggested the UofM campus. I think this is a good spot because, 1. I go there. 2. It's right on the green line of the metro with shuttles directly to and from the student union. I do alot of work with the SGA and could check out prices and arranging a room rental. I know that on campus student organizations get a better deal on these things so I can talk to the Terrapin Gaming Club about sponsering such an event. Let me know if this is a possible venue and I'll start gathering some general information.

Please do...

Xath,

Please do check it out. I would prefer a venue that has (a) Excellent DC Beltway access -and- (b) Excellent Metro access -and- (c) Plenty of Room -and- (d) All of the above!

I believe both University of Maryland (College Park) and Northern VA Community College offer all the above, so we should check out both.

The North Carolina Game Days are at the student union at NC State and done in conjunction with the Student Gaming Club there. It seems to work well and offers some synergies.

Since you have the contact, if you could chase this down, it would help immensely...thanks and feel free to post here, PM or e-mail me as needed.

I'm not interested in DMing, as I do that all the time and would love a chance to just *play* for once  But I'd be happy to help out with logistics etc. Metro accessibility would be a big plus for me, but I can always take a cab if need be. You can contact me at jkline at covad dot net if need be.

Thanks!

So I posted on the Terrapin Gaming Club board asking them if they would consider hosting the game day at the union. This makes a huge difference in the price of room rentals. I don't know how many people are interested in attending. Prices for rooms and the number of people each room can hold can be found at the link below.

Xath,

Appreciate that greatly. I figure we can probably get 1/3 the listed "auditorium seating" number in with table and chairs...so we would probably need one of the larger rooms (seating ~ 100 by their list). The student pricing makes a huge difference...plus, we don't know how many of them would like to play.

Please let me know back from them as soon as you hear something :D!

Wow! Talk about a good reply thus far and it has barely been a day since Old One's original post.

Just a quick update for ya Old One - I sent an E-mail to DreamWizards concerning getting an area there. They might charge a fee but I know they make a lot of money off people coming there and buying products, so I'm not sure. We wouldn't require any of their workers to help with the DMing/Games, so I can't say how they might try to price it other then for the use of the area. Nonetheless, waiting to hear back from them. Hopefully will know by the end of the day.

Concerning using University of MD, I'd have no problem pitching in some money for use of one of the rooms. I think the Prince George's Room would be nice with a 120 person capacity and costing (with some good luck) $125. I'd be willing to pitch in some money to help pay and see what I can have the little lady throw together for some foodstuffs...

...of course, don't hold me responsible if anyone else gets sick. I've formed a cast iron stomach so remember to eat at your own risk :oP

I DM for my regular group so I'd really prefer to have a shot at playing for once. If you plan it I am SO there! :D

(1) I am willing to DM/GM. I would prefer to run <insert game system/genre>.
(2) I would prefer to DM/GM a morning slot/afternoon slot/no preference.
(3) I am/am not willing to help organize/schedule/coordinate the game day.
(4) I think the best location for such an event is _____________ .

1) I'd prefer not to DM/GM but will if needed. I would prefer to run Twilight: 2000 2.0 if I am needed to run anything.
2) If I am needed to run a game I don't really care which slot I am put into.
3) I am not willing to help organize the game day. Too busy with work.
4) I think the best location would be GMU or Game Parlor. Both are relatively close to me.

Do we have any idea on a date or are we just kicking it around right now?

Check the Lead Post...

CJ -

I am looking at a couple of dates right now. Depending on venue, a late August date might work best - like August 28th. It is prior to Labor Day...Football season hasn't started yet...etc.

I would be happy to hear others thoughts/input on this...

Really any date is fine... I just need to know in advance so I don't plan anything for that weekend. A date is also handy for the DMs so they know how much prep time they have.
