[Microlite20] The Eye of the Night (Recruiting)

Alvordian

First Post
Adventure: A campaign based on the mini adventures set forth in Dungeon Crawl Classics #14 Dungeon Interludes.
System:Microlite20
Players: 4-6 (will run with a few as 3)
Posting: Would love daily, will accept at least 3 times a week, but am flexible.

I have found in recent months that I miss 3x in the 10 years since its release. However, a lack of time and the size of the system make gaming a bit impractical.

In addition, I love the Dungeon Crawl Classics line and have had little chance to run them. So I'd like to run a adventure/campaign with M20, the Purest Esssence version, that has the core and expert rules. M20 allows for easy conversion, is built off the d20 system and its mechanics, and is rules lite enough to work for a messageboard game.

My game then is to try to create a campaign based on DCC #14 Dungeon Interludes. It is a series of connected short adventures, which combined make an adventure path that takes PCs from level 1 to 13, from new adventurers to heroes saving the kingdom.

The length of each adventure is short (also perfect for messageboard play) allows for ample tinkering by yours truly and gives players some diversity instead of one big dungeon crawl.

Chargen: PCs begin at level 1. I'll allow the honor system. Players may roll at home and post their sheet. You can even use the M20 Character Generator, just make sure you check the Expert rules box. You'll have to buy equipment or choose a signature spells manually, but its fun to use even for such a rules lite system.

Also, for anyone who's curious here is a skill list example on how to use the d20 skills with the M20 equivalents.

Rathan-welcome aboard.

I don't have any examples for magic items. M20 allows for easy plug in of items from written adventures or the srd. For the most part they will work like the spells as listed in M20. And since M20 is built off the framework of d20 it shouldnt be too much of a leap- scrolls require a read magic spell, anyone could use a rod, etc. If you've played 3x it will be familiar, just simpler.

Most of the simplicity in M20 comes from the streamlining of skills and the elimination of feats. So in that regard its a bit more old school.

DCC refers to Dungeon Crawl Classics the line of adventures put out by Goodman Games over the last 5 years or so for 3x and now 4e

Also, did you pick rogue as your class? I think you left it off your sheet.

Cool... I look forward to playing the game.. however I'm not sure how diverse character to character gets with this system.. it may be so streamlined that it will be too cookie cutter in nature.. but I'm willing to give it a shot... if peoples RP is good it won't be too hard to get diverse characters I guess..... we shall see :)

I have to say in the handful of times Ive played M20, differentiation hasnt been too much of a problem. Classes still work in a similar way- fighters are good at fighting, casters cast spells ( and are a bit more versatile at lower levels), and rogues are generally still skill monkeys since subterfuge is a pretty important skill to have.

Along with the extra races and classes the Expert rules provide, M20 to me is very much a game were any character can try anything, but some will be better than others. The sharp division of labor in 3e among the classes is blurred a bit, which allows for more freedom of action, but the the areas of proficiency still exist, more or less.

And of course, great RPing always helps!

Ok shameless weekend plug, and a listing of M20 skill equivalents to d20 skills. My link in the first post won't load. What follows below is a copy from greywulf sho posted this in a M20 thread here at ENWorld a few years back.

Here are the skills from the d20 SRD and their Microlite20 equivalents:
Appraise - com+MIND
Balance - phys+DEX
Bluff - com+MIND
Climb - phys+DEX or STR, whichever is highest
Concentration - doesn’t apply. GM’s fiat applies
Craft - it’s an out of game thing. No one ever crafts things in-game, so it’s a redundant skill. Alternatively, know+DEX
Decipher Script - know+MIND or com+MIND
Diplomacy - com+MIND
Disable Device - sub+MIND or sub+DEX
Disguise - sub+MIND
Escape Artist - sub+DEX or sub+STR, depending on what you’re escaping out of
Forgery - com+DEX
Gather Information - com+MIND
Handle Animal - com+MIND or com+STR if the animal is bigger than you
Heal - know+MIND
Hide - sub+DEX
Intimidate - could be phys+STR, or sub+MIND or com+STR. You choose
Jump - phys+STR (long jump) or phys+DEX (high jump)
Knowledge - know+MIND
Listen - sub+MIND
Move Silently - sub+DEX
Open Lock - sub+DEX
Perform - com+MIND, though it could be DEX if you’re juggling, or STR if you’re a weightlifter
Profession - com+MIND, usually
Ride - com+DEX
Search - sub+MIND
Sense Motive - com+MIND
Sleight of Hand - sub+DEX
Speak Language - doesn’t apply. You either know the language or you don’t. Alternatively, com+MIND to understand subtle nuances, I guess
Spellcraft - MIND only
Spot - sub+MIND
Survival - phys+STR to survive, or sub+DEX or STR to hunt stuff.
Swim - phys+STR
Tumble - phys+DEX
Use Magic Device - you can either use it, or you can’t. GM fiat. Alternatively, MIND only
Use Rope - no, never ever. Use Rope is a DEAD SKILL. This skill is dead. It has passed the mortal coil (of rope). Use phys+DEX if you must, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Hmmm by my sinking recruiting thread it would seem that Microlite 20 is too lite for many here. No matter.

I will therefore abandon my attempt to run a game, but instead try to begin one with perhaps my favorite rule set:The free to download Mutant Future.

Mutant Future is sort of a new "old school" game. Its a post apocalyptic rpg in the spirit of Gamma World, Twilight 2000, or Darwin's World, but its no clone. Its built on the guts of the same rules that the 80's circa Tom Moldvay edited Basic D&D ran on. But its far crunchier, with mutant powers, high tech artifacts, and rules for android PCs. Chargen is random, but usually results in some cool powers. It is in fact almost like a gonzo version of a Supers RPG in that respect.

In a few days, I'll put up a recruiting thread for running a mini-sandbox set in a mutant filled world. Rathan I'll send you a PM. If you are interested let me know. Thanks for your interest.

I'll have to step aside on this one then... as I don't have access to that rules system and know really nothing about it... thanks though....

again.... due to work picking up for me and the unfamiliarity of the system combined I'm still going to stay no thanks to the rule set change and bow out with better judgment :) ..... thank you though for the opportunity :)
