Mirror Image and Magic Missile

Yes, my way enables a higher level wizard with 5 missiles to make short work of the Mirror Image spell, but a wizard with enough levels to have 5 Missiles should make short work of a lowly second level defensive spell.

So the 9th level wizard with his first level offensive spell should make short work of the 12th level wizard's second level defensive spell?

frankly... yes.
There are better counters for a magic missile than an image from a flimsy low level Illusion (take Shield for instance). Magic Missile is itself balanced by only a 5 missile limit and no further damage then 2-5 each.

A 12 level caster is very likely to have more than 5 images, so it would take more than one set of Magic Missile to negate it.

Two 1st level spells to cancel out a 2nd level spell?

Doesn't sound to bad.

Also take into account that your 12th level Wizard can do much in 2 rounds which is the minimum time needed to wipe out his mirror image spell completely (if he's lucky to have the maximum 8 images) by 2 consecutive Magic Missile spells cast by my 9th level Wizard. During those 2 rounds, your 12th level Wizard is free to do alot more than my Magic Missiles.

again, while my 9th level Wizard is busy trying to find the real you with flimsy 2-5 damage missiles, you are already free to drop a fireball on me.

And a displacement spell cast by a 5th level wizard has a 50% chance of negating the energy drain spell cast by the 17th level wizard.

The Protection from Elements (fire) spell cast by a 5th level wizard can absorb the damage from a fireball cast by a 10th level wizard, 100% of the time.

The 2nd level spell Glitterdust cancels out the 4th level spell Improved invisibility, 100% of the time (until the duration of the glitterdust is up).


Higher level spells don't always trump lower level spells.

Good examples, there are different counters to different spells. Just because Magic Missile is good at foiling Mirror Image, it doesnt mean that one or even both are broken.

BTW... even Faerie Fire is good against Invisibility, maybe not as good as glitterdust but still usefull in a poke.

It gets destroyed - it is not the carrier of the brooch, it is an illusionary image. If the carrier of the brooch also gets a missile, he gets no damage from that single missile.
