It looks like you are both right- in a way. Greenkarl is reading from the entry under the "Area" extra under the shape section (pg 191 in my pdf), while Shayuri is reading on the next page, still in the "Area" extra entry, but in the part about range, rather than shape.
I'll admit to being confused.
It looks like it works Greenkarl's way if you take Area, and choose "Perception" from the list of possible shapes, while it works Shayuri's way if you choose a different 'shape' (like burst), but have the power useable at Perception range (instead of close or ranged).
Right?
