[MoF] Favor of Ilmater + Monstrous Regeneration

When my players brought up this combo. I thought about it then stated

"It clearly states Cleric 4 (Ilmater) Even if the text says you can use it for other dieties , why would a diety of destruction care about subdual damage? What doesn't kill his cleric makes him stronger.

Think of the diety in question, then apply what fits with his ethos.

You could say that about any PHB spell, though.

You could...

...and should...

say that about any PHB spell, though.

Clerics, more than any other class, having ultimately no limit given by the rules, should abide to certain hard-to-fit-in-rules roleplaying restrictions, i.e. when it comes to their spell selection!

Technically, you wouldn't be immune to subdual damage at all. Undead creatures are immune to subdual damage, but take a look at the undead monsters (the revenant or curst templates from MoF come to mind) with regeneration.

So much for that idea! :)

Let me challenge your notions for just a second.

First, let me clarify that I don't disagree with your points.

Now, having said that, has anyone ever allowed this combo into a game? I would like to hear from them!

Here's why:

Favor is a 4th level spell (r: touch) with a relatively short duration 1 rd/lvl or 1 min/lvl.

Monstrous Regen is a 5th level spell (r: touch) with a VERY short duration (1 rd/2 lvls).

If you had to blow a fourth and fifth level spell, effectively in combat, how does that compare to other fourth and fifth level spells? Is it really that much tougher? As pointed out there are a number of ways around it...dispel, anti-, dead-magic zones, acid damage, fire damage, and frankly, just because you're not taking damage, doesn't mean you can't be stopped...any will save, insta-kill, etc. Hmmm....

Now, do I agree that an Epic/near-epic character with a persistent monstrous regeneration and persistent favor of ilmater is pretty wickedly tough. Again, on comparison, what could you accomplish with any other 8th and 9th level spell? Also, I'm sure persistent spell has been the topic of some debate on the boards. It certainly has become one since I started using it on my Epic cleric.

I'd love to hear from someone who's seen this in use during a campaign. Worst case scenario, they both serve their different purposes, but subdual damage (immune) must come from a source that was originally subdual damage.

I would point out that this spell is only accessable by clerics Of Ilmater, or a 4th level pal spell.

Not true.

MoF specifies that the spell, when cast by clerics of other faiths, is RENAMED by them (in-game). So a Selunite priest castign this spell, woudl call it Favor of Selune. A Banite priest, Favor of Bane. And so on.

Oh, on the issue of subdual immunity, etc: The way I would handle it is this: you get dealt real damage; FoI gives you no benefit against real damage. Monstroues REgeneration converts it to subdual dmage, unless the source was [fire] or [acid] based.

Now, you have a subdual damage total, but FoI renders you immune to the effects of any subdual damage you might actually HAVE during it's duration.

Thus, you won't be falling over YET, but when the FoI finally ends, you will be going to sleep for a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time, while you recover form your ludicrous subdual damage total.

:D And, it'll suck to be you if the FoI gets dispelled -- or suppressed by an antimagic field. Heh.
