i know that when you get monkey grip you can wield a bigger weapon, but you still take penalties. is the extra damage from a bigger weapon worth the penalty on AB? and if so, which weapon?

Monkey grip stopped being numericly worthwhile once Power Attack started giving two handed weapon wielders +2 damage per -1 to hit.

Well, perhaps if you had a race with the "Powerful Build" ability. I can definitely see a medium character using a 4d6 Greatsword with only a -2 penalty.

Monkey Grip is never worth it. It's always inferior to Power Attack, even if you're allowed easy access to oversized weapons (which some campaigns don't allow).

Who says you can't have both?

You could use the -2 from Monkeygrip to fuel an additional +4 damage from PA, however. Of course, this is capped by your BAB, but that is rarely an issue for level appropriate foes. They tend to have ACs decent enough that taking penalties larger than your BAB is unwise.

As has been mentioned before, two handed PA provides a -2 to hit with a +4 to damage, which is usually better than a random die from a larger weapon.

Also, if you *needed* that extra bonus to hit, you don't have to use any Power Attack. However, with Monkey Grip, you're always taking a -2 to hit with a big weapon.

Those abilities are worded so they don't combine.
