Monster Tiers

I've read alot about the tier system, and I'm wondering where certain monster classes (such as savage species progression) would fit? Specifically, one of the players in a group I'm about to join is playing a mindflayer (savage species progression) and I'm wondering how it would measure up to the other characters. Any feedback on monster class tiers is welcome.

The Savage species Mind Flayer class appears to be about on the same level as a Bard... mostly.

I would disallow the Mind Flayer from my campaign in your shoes. Once the player reaches level 14 he can mass stun everything in a 60 foot cone at will. For the purposes of DC at this level it's a 7th lvl spell + Cha. Even before that he can use Charm Monster at will.

Because the mind flayer will never be a significant combatant, he'll become what amounts to a two trick pony. When he isn't charming everything at will... he'll be stunning everything at will.

Although the Mindflayer may be interesting in terms of theme, I see this becoming a problematic player character.

As a compromise, consider offering a Half Illithid at a reduced LA or converting the LA to Monstrous Humanoid or Aberration levels especially because many of the half Illithids abilities improve as they level up based on HD.

Well, I'm not the DM, I was just cuious about it as a player. The DM is allowing it, the rest of the party is a wizard, a druid, and an icarnum, so the average tier of the group is farily high to begin with.

I've simply ignored this thread because I have no idea what a "monster tier" is. Of course, I don't have Savage Species.

I think that he is asking how the Tier System for classes would apply to the monster progressions from Savage Species. I'm not sure how powerful the monster progressions are in relation to a traditional class as Savage Species never much interested me.

Sorry to those who misinterpreted my vague wording.
