I like both of those especially but I also like the Enterprise theme... :)

Although it is certainly a break from the standard Trek themes, I though Faith of the Heart was appropriate when combined with the imagery used in the opening credits. To me, it gave testimony to man's determination and spirit to explore the stars. While I liked the song to begin with, I gained a new appreciation of it from associating it with the series.

Unfortunately, I do not get to watch many of the episodes (my local station seems to keep moving the time slot on a whim), I've mostly enjoyed those that I've seen but agree that something is lacking. Part of it my be that there doesn't seem to be that sense of being on the fringe and the technology seems to convenient. They get something new right when they need it most. I am looking forward to the new direction, although I have doubts it will re-energize the show beyond the fourth season.

I love the visuals, hate the song. I'm not really a big fan of the DS9 and VOY
themes either, although they don't turn me off like the ENT one. I just feel rather
neutral about them.
Personally, I like opening visuals that present who's who in the credits. Instead of just saying "Scott Bakula. Jolene Blalock. Joe Smith. Et Cetera" they should either have "Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer" or accompany his name by a picture of the character.

I'm also kind of fond of voice-overs in the credits. Babylon 5 had the best credits ever, and kept evolving them over the seasons.

You also mentioned Stargate's credits. I think the credits for the first seasons were OK, but the credits in the season I'm watching now (season 4) are the most boring I've ever seen. The theme music is cool and all, but just panning the "camera" across a stone face is... dull.

Well, I haven't seen that one.

You see, over here, we have had the same golden-season 1
-panning-over-the-stargate credits until season six. That one
rocked.

And I agree with the 'who's who' thing.

Anyhoo, I was only commenting on the themes, not the visuals.

I like the opening credits, visuals and song, a lot. They're pretty inspiring. Some of the visuals actually give me a lump in my throat everytime I see them - the space shuttle Enterprise being taken from its hangar, and the close-up of Alan Sheppard (especially). It gives me the sense that the show is in touch with its roots in the real world, which I think scifi (and its fans) eschew way too readily.

I have to admit that the opening credits and song have grown on me quite a bit. It's not my favourite of openings, but I think it works well. If they had to change something, then I wouldn't be upset at losing the song. The montage, however, should stay.

Re: Enterprise opening credits

The original theme music for Enterprise was supposed to be an adaptation of the theme from Generations, but the producers thought that it might be a little too cheesy, or that it might not fit with the style of the images in the credits.

A lot of viewers I know didn't care much for the Patch Adam movie soundtrack music (originally sung by Rod Stewart). Considering the majority of the episodes I've seen so far, the music is the only highlight. :p

Nevertheless, a lot of them prefer the other music that was used during the ENTERPRISE promo trailer aired during the summer before the first episode. It's "Wherever You Will Go" by The Calling. Others still prefer the orchestral tune.

I must admit that for a lot of Sci-Fi and other fantasy films I do prefer some sort of traditional orchestral arrangement.

I remember being put off a bit with the Ladyhawke soundtrack, which was preformed by "The Philharmonia Orchestra" and scored by Alan Parsons (for you younger cats AP was a seventies "rocker" who was akin to Yes, Genesis and perhaps either ELP or ELO (depending on your perspective ;) ). He did one particularly notable album called I, Robot which was influenced by the writings of Isaac Asimov (a very prolific, if perhaps "lite" sci-fi and general writer).

While most of the sountrack might have past for fairly mainstream, I recall that perhaps the sound mix was a bit blaring and it seemed to cut in at times that felt inappropriate, rather than simply unscoring the movie.

Nonetheless, I think the Enterprise theme, while untraditional for both Sci-Fi and ST remains very appropiate to its purpose and quite moving.

I didn't like the music at first. Actually, I hated it. But I always liked the montage guiding us through history and the Trek version of the future. The theme has since grown on me. I actually think it fits now. I was also very surprised to learn that it was not sung by Rod Stewart. *shrugs*
