Morrowind: Best Computer RPG. Ever.

I wandered out of the first little town, met a bandit who I had to talk into attacking me...Once he tried to extort money...then I killed him when he attacked me...Then I wandered for awhile and found a woman who wanted to give me her glove so that I could take it to some guy she loved. I briefly looked in my journal, and the guy she loved turned out to be the bandit.
That wasn't the same bandit that the woman wanted to meet. The one she wants to meet doesn't try to extort money from you. He's Nelos Onmar. The guy who wants money is Nels Llendo. ;)

WHat I always hated was deciding to clean up some of the other plot-lines, and joining a guild as a high level guy and still being treated like a 1st level nobody. Especially in Oblivion, where the fighters guild fellow wants to call you maggot and such, when you can slaughter most of the guild without breaking a sweat.
But isn't that realistic? You're the new guy in the guild, he's an established guild fixture. Of course he thinks he could take you on. Regardless of what he might have heard you accomplish. "You think you're somebody just because your friends got you made into a celebrity? You did what by yourself? I don't buy it." :p

And of course you hate it. You'd hate it in real life too trying to apply to a firm that wouldn't believe you capable of what you really where capable of.

"Whats that Archmage? You want to join the fighters guild? Is that Ebony Armor, I'm not sure since I've never seen anything so powerful. What kind of hammer is that, Godslayer you say? Well Archmage Maggot, you fresh meat gotta prove your capability to the guild first! This lady is having a problem with rats..."

It's a matter of power going unrecognized, plus the only motive to do it is to complete the storyline, not gain power. A first level guy might put up with the trashtalk to advance himself, but the Archmage should probably get a LITTLE respect. :)

It's great in Morrowind, when you get to choose the topic "Neravarine" late in the game.
"Hello, hows it going."
"I AM YOUR GOD!"
"That's nice, are you shopping today?"

I see your point. :)

But: "oh look everyone, the great archmage thinks he knows something about being a warrior. I bet he had to ask someone which end to hold the hammer with. He probably couldn't hit a barn with it if he tried." ;)

I also found it mostly boring and tedious. Not even close to the top 10 of the best computer RPGs ever in my opinion. Now Fallout... that's a great game! :D

But if you like it, which is cool, of course, then Oblivion might be worth a look for you as well. It's the Morrowind successor and has some pretty cool features. I didn't like it much either, but that doesn't have to mean anything, obviously.
Agreed and agreed. I found Morrowind to be boring, tedious, and ugly (the "brown" comment by Rodrigo Istalindir nearly made me fall on the floor!). A dreadful game for me.

Glad others are enjoying it, though.

On a similar note, I picked up Oblivion last week. It's been blowing me away ever since. I never tried morrowind, but after seeing this thread, and seeing its cheap price in stores now, I may give it a try....

Only one problem: I'm stuck on Oblivion! I can't put the damned thing away! It's too addictive! It's fantastic! :) I forsee many sleepless nights ahead...

Not sure if playing Morrowind after Oblivion will be much fun, though. Oblivion is surely better in every possible regard.

Except for plotline.
While the core plotline was a little weaker, I think it helped the game overall by not focusing as much. I know a couple folks that run through the main quest of most games and don't sidequest, with Oblivion that sense of directness is minmized.

I think both were great, I just liked the look of Oblivion better. The difficulty was a bit screwier though, and the voice acting too monotone, the faces all kind of ugly and lips didn't sync well...

But, heck, most games nowadays are bad in that way. The new Bioware looks improved, but it's in "overhype" phase at this point, so hard to tell.

Best? No.

Pretty darned good and a lot of fun? Yep.

Then again, I have no idea how many hours I happily wasted wandering aound in Daggerfall, daedric weapon in hand. And running like a bunny every time I heard that voice in the darkness screaming 'Vengeance!' :p

It was a good game to play tourist in. :)
