My first NWN experience...

Well, I got the game this morning, rushed home, installed it and immediately headed for multiplayer. In retrospect, I really should have read the manual or something first, because I was running around like a headless chicken, not knowing how to do anything.

Anyway - my first experience was bad. It was in some town, and people were just running round slaughtering random peasants. Nobody spoke to anyone, and there was no teamwork. So I left.

Then I saw Eric's Tavern and popped in. That was much more fun (despite the fact that I immediately went to the bit marked "very dangerous" and got killed a whole bunch of times while wandering around trying to get out again).

Luckily, Eric popped up and gave me a few tips, and I went into his "less-dangerous" bit and killed a few duergar and fire beetles (including one that pleaded with me not to hurt him, but it turned out to be Eric in disguide).

Anyway - that was a lot of fun. Now I'm off to play with the Toolsset!

Glad you got an enjoyable first experience

Glad you were not turned off by the first server you went to. NWN looks like it will work best when you go with a game with people you know. Wizardru, Valanthe, Dravot, Tantra, and I had a great five player game Tuesday night clearing out the Beggar's Nest of undead. The only complaint we had was communication since by the time you typed something it was too late. Tonight we are going to try another game using a Roger Wilco voice communciations server I have set up.

Important tip about hosting a Roger Wilco server: PUT A PASSWORD ON IT! I set it up and ran over to Wizardru's house to test it. He got on and there were two guys already on it speaking French. "Well" I said to him "at least we know it works."

Wizardru has picked up the world builder's guide book and has already been messing with some small test scenarios and cranky NPCs.

Don't forget that the quickchat system (V button to access) has a pretty smooth system to allow your characters to offer a wide range of comments, commands, requests, etc. I keep the manual opened to that page when I play, and intend to memorize all the options eventually . Three quick keystrokes are all you need; you can even tell others to wait if you want to say more.

Unfortunately I think a lot of people see that as being Diablo II - run around, kill stuff, get powerful, keep killing stuff. When I went on Eric's server a few days ago, there were a couple of people like that, just running up and killing stuff.

I've only tried multi once. My first level character appeared in the hall of justice in chapter one, and was immediately killed by a half-orc with a double axe. :-( I haven't tried it again, I want to finish the single player game first.

You should try a "friendly" server with player-killing set to "none." Try the Role Play section of the matching service. I'd estimate that about 1 in every 4 games I link up to are worth playing for any length of time. It's worth it once you start finding ones you really like though.
