I have to give my opinion The NJO is horrible mainly because they killed Chewbacca. Oh wait it was RA Salvatore the creator of Drizzt everyone's favorite drow. Now he's a no good wookie killer! Damn you RA Salvatore damn you.
Honestly, that was one of the best moments of the books. The one thing that always bugged me about the rest of the novels(even though I liked them) was that you always knew the heroes were going to come out fine. When Chewie died...everything was thrown out the window. It put some realism into Star Wars that helped a lot. And besides, you have to look at HOW he died. C'mon...it took a freakin moon to kill the wookie! A MOON! Even Vader didn't go out like that! ;)

Chewie's death did set things up that way.

But in the end, what it came down to was that only people/sentient beings who were close to the Skywalker/Solo families were going to buy the proverbial farm...

But, in all, it was not a single specific event that made the NJO unpleasant - it was uneven plotting and pacing that killed it for me.

Honestly, I do understand that. In my opinion, its a valid reason and its just one we don't agree on. I guess that's allowed on ENWorld. ;)

Its the people that hate it because they
killed Chewie/Anakin(really, I never like him all that much...Jacen's just better. ;)
that bothers me the most. The reason we only see those close to the Skywalker/Solo family get knocked off is because...well, they're the focus. It makes sense we see people around them get killed off. Besides, we've NEVER really seen that before. Not to such a close degree, at least. Its something that did make it hard to read some of the latter novels when you would flip pages just knowing the world would be fine at the end.
