D&D 5E (2014) New Capenna is releasing for Magic the Gathering... will it join D&D too?

Well this sounds interesting. Sounds like the same kinds of inspirations that led to West End Games old Bloodshadows setting - a concept I always liked (and stole for some of my own games) but was saddled with the Masterbook system which ... eh.

If they don't do a setting book for it I'll probably try to get the inevitable art book at least for inspiration.

New Capenna doesn't have fire arms, instead spellcasters make gun geastures and say bang. Not kidding. And they have a fantasy Tommy Gun like magic item that shoots out magical energy instead of bullets, and magical instruments that act as weapons.

Yes, here is said tommy gun:

Its a weird confluence of influences New Capenna, the 20's noir, gangster tropes, mtg colour pie (and shards), old and new Phyrexians, various fantasy races, and a weird religion that is basically like an alliance between Angels and Demons, and Dystopian ruins of more traditional Fantasy Kingdoms.

It does make sense.

The Phyrexians are like fantasy Borg Terminators. Fantasy Borg Terminators that really love Hellraiser. Demons and angels united on New Capenna to drive them out, because if there is anything that will make you unite with your greatest enemy it's an extraplanar army of nightmare machine soldiers that will incorporate you into their collective while they consume and destroy the entire plane. Then the demons, being demons, betrayed the angels, captured them all, and turned them into a street-drug-proxy called Halo.

It seems like some of the angels manage to escape, however, and they are none too pleased.

It's a really interesting setting so far. Very creative and dynamic. The art deco art style was a great choice.

That is both the dumbest and most awesome thing ever. And I am completely behind it 100%!


Although, this type of setting also seems like the kind of one where Magitek Guns, of all things, WOULD be in it. Lightning Tommy Gun is pretty swanky sounding though.

My gut says "probably not", but I think it would work great for it. Magic world building has been on a roll lately: Kaldheim, Kamigawa, and New Capenna would all be great D&D Settings.

Kaldheim is too easy to be adapted to D&D but I haven't seen news about that. Why Theros but not Kaldheim?

I wonder if the firearms in Kamigawa: Neon Dinasty are magitek too.

To be an aasimar or a celadrin (elf with planetouched blood) should be a true nightmare, because you know if you are catched, then you will be used to gather... your vitae or lifeforce.

Bullets shouldn't be too useful against infernal outsiders, and firearms without licence wouldn't be allowed, to avoid rebellions by the population.

Other point is if necromancers could discover the way to gather "mana" from incorporeal undead/ghosts/wraiths... or what if spirit of dead people don't become undead, but other monster type: fae or elemental? To avoid PC focused too much into undead-slaying.

Shouldn't warforged and other living constructs to be possible in New-Capena?

I know little-to-nothing about New Capenna, but a roaring twenties-inspired D&D setting would be pretty cool.

Heck, Kamigawa would take D&D in some neat directions as well.

One of the future settings for Magic: the Gathering could be a fantasy diesel-punk version of G.I.Joe where Cobra is not only a terrorist group but an alien invader empire (and frienemy with decepticons). If New Capena is 20-30's, and Kamigawa is cyberpunk then a postapocalyptic "panzerpunk" 30-40's setting shouldn't be too complicate.
