New Class: Shaman (OGC)

Mindcrime

First Post
Hi guys -- I realize there's a shaman class in OA but I didn't like that one too much and plus, it's not OGC, which means I can't use it third-party books and such. So, I created my own shaman - this is one is very focused on the ecstatic/trance experience universal to shamans in every culture.

It's *very rough* and needs considerable tweaking, I'm quite sure ;) Any, all, whatever feedback will be so appreciated that I don't how to repay any of you.

I really like the concepts here.

However the class seems a bit too powerful to me. I reccomend reducing the Hit Die down to 1d6 and putting together a spell-list for it. Just saying that the Shaman can spontaneously cast spells from *BOTH* the cleric and druid lists is much-much too broad.

And as a minor quibble on the 9th level spell progression I would limit them to 3 at 20th level. ( 1 2 2 3 )

Thanks, drowdude. I'll admit, the one place I was really skeptical the class would hold water was in being able to cast from both class lists - in fact, I had started to do a shaman-specific spell list but then decided against it for whatever reason (probably because my coffee was getting cold and I wanted to leave Starbucks, which is where I do most of my writing :) ) Your comment really reinforces my initial gut instinct.

I would agree with drowdude on the few suggested changes, but overall I really like your version of the shaman. It seems to be rather well thought of, and easily could be tweaked as necessary to fit into any campaign type which is always a bonus when it comes to new character classes.

Ok, I updated the PDF with a tenative spell list - it's a mixture of the cleric and druid lists, though not a total merging of the two - all plant based magic remains the exclusive realm of the druid, while a lot of cleric spells are dropped. Still, the lists are rather large at the upper levels (compared to the existing cleric/druid lists.) I'll refine the list gradually :)

Also implemented drowdude's suggestions cuz they were really good ones.

Added a blurb to the taboo 'ability' on making game-mechanic based taboos.

Looks kewl!

A minor note on Flash Flood... Since you are using the standard save mechanic now you can remove (See text) as a save notation, and remove the part in the text where you explain the mechanic.
