Dragonlance New Dragonlance Novels from Weis and Hickman in 2026

New trilogy focuses on the Solamnic Knight Huma

Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman announced a new trilogy of Dragonlance books titled Dragonlance Legacies with the first novel titled War Wizard.

Tracy Hickman made the announcement on his Facebook page this past weekend:
Just announced at Gencon: Margaret Weis and I will be writing a new trilogy: Dragonlance Legacies. First book: War Wizard

Margaret Weis’s Facebook announcement had a bit more detail:
Tracy and I are pleased to announce Dragonlance Legacies. The story of the legendary wizard, Magius, and his friendship and adventures with the Solamnic knight, Huma. Published by Random House Worlds. 2026.

Weis also answered a few questions giving us a bit more information.
  • Weis and Hickman are writing the books together
  • When asked if this will conflict with pre-existing lore established in Richard A. Knaak’s The Legend of Huma, Weis said “This is our story.”
  • When asked if Hasbro was involved, Weis said “Random House Worlds is the publisher”
  • The omnibus edition of Chronicles will be accompanied by an omnibus edition of Legends as well in 2025.
So far, the only new book officially announced through any publishers is Dragonlance Chronicles: Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Witner Night, Dragons of Spring Dawning omnibus edition coming in February 2025 (pre-order on Amazon through this affiliate link), but it may be several months until we get details on the Legends omnibus or the new trilogy.

5E had so much potential in the first 5 or so years, then around the turn of the decade the course was altered and its kind of been a crap show ever since. The newer Destiny trilogy didn't really interest me, after I learned about the lawsuits and the extreme amount of meddling WotC did in the story/world, but a free reign exploring of Huma, Magius, and Kaz would have my interest. I hope Hasbro has almost zero involvement in this trilogy, just let W&H do their thing.

I wouldn't expect to see Kaz. He's Richard Knaak's creation, and whenever Weis & Hickman have given their take on Huma and Magius (hints in DoSF, their brief appearance in DoaVM, the Anvil of Time adventure, and probably Dragons of Fate--I don't know, not having read anything but the last chapter), Kaz has been absent and the other two decidedly different from Knaak's versions.

Legend
Dragons of Summer Flame was driven by Weis & Hickman--the only major involvement TSR had, as I understand it, was limiting it to the 'one book to finish up the Chronicles cycle' which they had contracted for instead of the 'trilogy with game support and spinoff novels' W&H wanted.
From my understanding the book was initiated by TSR, to introduce a new age to DL and they limited it to one book (W&H wanted three).

The plot probably was largely up to them, but the end point was set by TSR, TSR wanted a new age for a new product line, and W&H were told to make it happen

So . . . yes, this will conflict with Knaak's existing stories. Not a fan of Weis & Hickman breaking away from the existing canon of Dragonlance. They are the OG authors, but Dragonlance was a shared world with contributions from many writers, editors, game designers, and visual artists from Day One.

And yes, WotC is involved. They own Dragonlance lock, stock, and barrel. However, they might not be heavily involved in editing or oversight of "Classic" Dragonlance.

Still, I'll give it a read when War Wizard drops in 2026. I haven't been impressed with the recent Dragonlance Destinies trilogy so far (haven't read the third book yet), but W&H's books are a huge part of my tween years and I'm a sucker for the nostalgia of it.

I might go for those fancy omnibus editions too . . .

Current trilogy deals with time travel and changing things like in BttF.

Both timelines can exist. The original and the new.

I haven’t finished the latest book but I assume that’s where it’s heading.

So it won’t “erase” the old timeline just have an alternate one.

Which I say is better than a flat out retcon

If you love Huma and Magius def read the 2nd book of the latest trilogy. It may be bar none my favorite DL book since the original Trilogy

the decision to start DL over with a new age happened under TSR and was done in one book (Dragons of Summer Flame), not a trilogy. The trilogies came later and the damage was already done by then
Which isn't what you said to begin with and my response was to what you actually said, which was blaming TSR for the War of Souls trilogy. I've heard the same things over the years though, that TSR wanted a setting to make a new type of game in and the result was the end of Dragons of Summer Flame and the path that led the setting towards the SAGA system.

Since there seem to be a lot of big DL fans in this thread, here’s a question for you:

I’ve never read any DL novels. I was given the first Destinies book recently as a gift, but I know it’s not the best place to jump on board the series. For years I have had the inclination to read the Chronicles and Legends trilogies “someday.” If I read Chronicles and Legends in the upcoming fancy omnibus volumes, will I be ready to skip ahead to Destinies, or is there something else I really ought to read after Legends and before Destinies?

Please assume that I’m not asking for a complete preferred reading order for the entire series of every DL novel, because I have limited reading time and dozens of other unread books already, and no matter how much I like Chronicles and Legends, if I’m told “You really have to read x books after Legends and before Destinies,” well, if that’s your honest opinion then that’s exactly what I’m looking for, but also, the greater the value of x is, the likelier I am to just stop at Legends and pass the Destinies book on to someone else.

Chronicles and Legends will give you what you need for the new trilogy, I can't think of any compelling reason to read anything else to understand the events of the Destinies books.

Mostly just need to read Chronicles. Legends would be good as well before starting Destinies.

Likewise, not a fan of them deciding to tell their own versions of the story of characters already told. Knaak's Legend of Huma was one of the better non-Weis & Hickman Dragonlance books. And it further emphasizes one of the big problems of the Dragonlance fiction line - its difficulty in moving beyond the past.

Still, the parts with Magus and Huma in Dragonsof Fate were well done.

Just can't tell new stories.... It's like Star wars.... And grrm.

I don't usually care about canon.... But rewriting one of the better written stories is an interesting choice.
