new shapechange - Prulinna, woodland

Devon

First Post
Hi, folks,

Here's a new creature I came up with. I was unsure whether to make it a fey creature or a shapechanger, so I made it a shapechanger.

Let me know what you think when you get a chance.

The prulinna is a woodland shapechanger whose bite transforms mortals to small animals.

The prulinna looks like a soft, green caterpillar with four improbably segmented insectoid legs, and a turnip-shaped head like a strange fey creature with long pointy ears, large, childlike eyes, and a wicked grin. It sports a mane of ruddy, soft bristles running from the top of its head down its back.

A prulinna typically sees herself as the guardian of her area of the woods, and will exercise her shapechanging powers to spy on would-be intruders, sneaking in to polymorph them if they prove to be a threat.

Combat:
The prulinna prefers to strike from hiding, nipping intruders and transforming them into smll, harmless, land-bound creatures. It may use its spell-like abilities to divide its foes, making it easier to subdue them.

Spell-Like Abilities: 3/day- dancing lights, entangle; 1/day- detect chaos, detect evil, detect law. These abilities are as the spells cast by a 9th-level sorcerer (save DC 12 + spell level).

Polymorph Bite (Su): The bite of the prulinna acts as a polymorph other spell (Fortitude save negates, DC 12). Prulinnas typically turn hostile intruders into hedgehogs, rats, and rabbits. The prulinna can reverse the transformation with another bite if she wishes, but should she be slain, nothing short of a wish spell will return the victim to its original form.

Polymorph Self (Su): The prulinna can assume the form of any woodland creature of Diminutive size or smaller, at will, any number of times per day. The prulinna does not heal damage in this way.

Skills: Prulinnas receive a +3 racial bonus to Hide and Move Silently checks. * This bonus increases to +5 if they are in woodlands.

this is just nitpicking:

I think it should only have a fraction of a Hit Die. I can't imagine this creature being as tough as an orc.

On the same note, you didn't put down avg. HP.

Other than that nitpicking stuff, it looks fine to me.

A nasty creature. The party's wizard, sleeping innocently in her tent, awakens to find herself a rabbit.

I also forgot Challenge Rating (which I later figured to be about 2). Both have been fixed.

Thanks for the tips. Anything else come to mind?

Well, Devon, I'd have to say you have hit the jackpot with this one. I think this is probably my favorite of your creations. There are not very many interesting monsters out there that are smalller than Tiny. A few nitpicks- it looks like you forgot to put the fine size bonus to Hide (+16). Also a question on a few of the skill, it seems like you put more ranks in Spot and Wilderness Lore than you are allowed by Hit Dice, which at 1 HD or less, is only 4.

Thank you! I'm glad I was able to come up with something innovative.

I totally forgot the size modifier, and the skills need some fine tuning.

Thank you for your critiques -- I will make the appropriate changes.
