No save or die spells?

In my homebrew I have made the Drow elves slaves to the death Gods and all raise spells summon a drow elf so that the party may barter with them for their friends soul back. The cost of the raise depends on how badly the death god wants to keep it (Level). Many times this has lead to the trading of magic items or a piece of each players soul (XP) as well as a part of the deceased's soul for the character to be brought back. This usually means that a strong bond between characters must exist before a raise will happen. The players seem to like it and it has made for some very cool roleplaying moments.

As for save or die spells, I try to avoid them when I can, but I like the idea of -1 hp if you fail the save.

In my world the return-to-life spells are around, but no one uses them. The general community of good aligned dieties are the only ones who can offer back-from-the-dead, but every time they do, the evil dieties get to cast one also (they can't go first, they have to wait for the otherside to cast one).

So, if your character is worth bringing back even though the priests know-for-a-fact that doing so will return one of the greatest evil badies in history to the world too, then you get raised.

Most characters are not worth the return of a major native half-devil or high-teens-level anti-paladin coming back to wreak havok on the world.

Seemed to give the player a little sense of perspective :).
