not high powered options but things to do in combat that are not roll d20, deal 11 damage. yes, very fun, cant wait for next turn, miss 0 damage, wait 20 minutes, deal 9 damage.
Fun is where you find it I guess. AD&D was pretty much this for years, and frankly speaking, I always had a lot of fun playing fighters then.

I like to find my fun in the adventure, not on my character sheet, but I know many people are more into the character sheet than the adventure. 🤷‍♂️

that is why I played mostly casters in 3.5e
Scout was a fun martial class, and OFC there was the Bo9S, that is the way martial characters should have been from the start.

now you are mixing two separate things. Roleplay is roleplay, mechanics are mechanics.
I said that my rogue(scout) was great for roleplay and exploration and what not, just that combat was 1 speed only.

Beats me how you're waiting 20 minutes fir a go. Few of my combats in OSR last 20minutes total.

Alot if 5E the fun is kinda fake. Eg OSR 1f6+3 not to exciting 5E much better 1d10+5+1d6. OSR Ogre 19 hp 5E one 59. Derp.

All they've done is bloat the hit points and make the math harder for those who can't add up fast.

4E bloated the HP and slowed combat down so riders were more relevant as per usual in 5E all editions death is the best debuff.

So in a lot of cases it's an illusion.

I don't think you meant to quote me, but @Horwath ...

Only 2 weapons requires extra rolling,

Greatsword, Longsword, Longbow fighter seems super easy if you are paying attention.

IME it is pretty hard for the DM to keep track of Longsword and Longbow though, especially if there are a lot of enemies and a lot of movement.

SAP and Slow are the most difficult in the games I have played.

Damn, you mean I've been having ersatz fun all this time? I've gotta learn to get better at telling the real stuff from the forgeries. :(

Hit point bloat from 3e onwards really changed the game. I use fireball vs ogres as my comparison. Before wotc when you get fireball, you have a good chance of killing an ogre (fireball 17.5 damage, ogre 19 hit points). Can't remember if 5e has a lower chance to save against an average save DC but even if they don't, a 5e fireball deals an average of 28 damage, only half the ogres hit points.

You can have fun in any edition but hitting for say triple damage the big number is fun. But if the target has triple the hp it's a wash.

Your doing the same thing as an older edition but making it harder to add up the numbers.

Yup not just Ogres either but CR 3 hitting 60+ hp, CR 5 100+, giants hitting 150-200.

Basically requires a broadside from a large party to drop them.

I'm leaning towards direct damage via spells becoming semi useless. Since BG3 I've noticed a couple of players toning down damage vs control.

I also used an order cleric and used slow more than spirit guardians. You can't keep up with incoming damage so better off mitigating it.
