So what are some of the candidates for the most danger for the least payoff?

I've always felt the 6XP for the Basic D&D 1/2HD giant bee was really paltry since its sting was save or die, no onset delay. Sure it died after delivering the sting, but the sting also got to do auto damage per round until removed.

There were other low HD save or die critters in basic, but most of them let you live for several turns [1 turn = 10 minutes] even after failing the save. The 2 HD crab spider gave a +2 to the save and had a 1d4 turn delay, while the 1 HD spitting cobra had a 1d10 turn delay on its fatal poison bite.
