D&D 5E (2014) Official errata/clarifications for 5e?

First Post
During the playtest process, Mike Mearls and the rest of the team often offered clarifications on the intent of various rules. They've been much more quiet on that front since the official PHB release. This is probably partly because they've been busy as hell, and maybe partly because they don't want to muddy their PR push with a bunch of nitpicky clarifications over Twitter. Bute whatever the cause, we're left wondering about various misprints and unclear rules in the PHB. (Just for my favorite class: Is Ray of Sickness on the warlock list? Are level-restricted warlock invocations dependent on character level or class level? Does Agonizing Blast add damage to each blast or just the first? Et cetera.)

I know we can all guess at likely answers to many of these questions, but I'd like to use this thread as a place for collecting all "official" clarifications, meaning those that come directly from WOTC. They're communication through enough channels that it should be handy to keep this thread going as a quick reference. (Or please go ahead and let me know if there's already a thread or resource for this that I'm missing.)

I'd love to see one. I was thinking to go through making a list of cases where I think there's an ambiguity or a thing that looks like an error, but that'd take a long time. Might do it anyway.

With the new philosophy of "Rulings not Rules," I think some things have been left intentionally vague. This allows each DM to determine the best ruling for the group, without being beholden to RAW. For many things, I think this is best.

For some things, where either the wording is strange or where the designer's intent is unclear, I wish they would return to the Sage Advice column, either on their website or in Dragon (when and if it ever returns). I generally distrust the Mike Mearls tweets, because many of them are off the cuff responses which sets off the forums.

That's a good question - I've seen nothing official yet. I think like Shiroiken said, the brevity of the rules means that errata is not as crucial as say 3rd edition.

a) Yeah I brought up the Warlock's Quick Build Ray of Sickness not being on their spell list. But it was on the list in the PHB Alpha Draft. So I have to say they didn't change it on the Quick Build when they revised the PHB Spell List. They replaced some offense with defense ie. Armor of Agthys and Expeditious Retreat and made Protection from Evil also from Good.

I asked WotC if Ray of Sickness was errata Aug 13, they got back to me on the 16th. It seems like they have the same person answering my Q's now since I had a few of them. Which is cool. He knows what he's talking about and makes it clear. This is his response:

"Thank you for contacting Wizards Customer Service. I have received your email and have forwarded it up to the correct team. At this time I can not guarantee a response back about this issue. Any new information will be posted on website.

Please let us know if you ever have any further questions or concerns. You can reply to this email or you can call us at the phone number listed below during business hours. We’ll be happy to help as best we can."

b) I noted that they don't list the average HP option when leveling on the back of the Basic Set Pre-gen character sheets. I'd think that'd be something a beginner should be reminded of. Instead of rolling terribly at a low level. (btw I rolled up some PC's 1-20th HP's and I came out ahead rolling vs taking the avg)

c) This isn't errata, but I mentioned they could add the word 'Feat' to the class advancement tables as a reminder because it's easy to forget. "Ability score Improvement or Feat"

d) I asked them for clarification on something else. I think it was the Teilfing racial trait Hellish Rebuke combined with the Warlock Spell option Hellish Rebuke. They have similar but different uses. (it's true my Q's mostly been verification rather than errata). Two WotC reps confused each other but I got the info I wanted.

e) So yeah even WotC is learning the new system a bit and whomever wrote it : (sim to when the iPad first came out I went to an Apple Store and asked them if they had a little training session for them. They said no we played around with it 15 min before the store opened : )

f) As you can see the more you read the PHB the more questions pop up as to what they really mean. Or they leave you hanging when all they had to do is add a couple words, a phrase, or sentence at the risk of being redundant. Just like their email responses clear it up. I'm not completely nuts about the Pact Blade and they even called it a Weapon not a blade! lol And he gave me examples like you guys did.

g) The good thing is WotC do answer Q's and follow-ups if they can. Even when I posted the Warlock Mystic Arcanum Feature here I glossed over the rules before I could delete it. They actually did answer that and he said he had to look it up to be sure. But I told them well I'm embarrassed I missed why the Warlock spell list goes up the 9th level - dooh

h) So based on my experience (I don't know how many here email or call them) I encourage to ask them and post it here. Even if the answer is like 'a' above.

i) Fyi to contact WotC http://company.wizards.com/contact-us#company

j) I know how errata can happen so I'm one all for WotC posting errata FAQ like they did for 4e. As long as you can find it. It's nothing for WotC be embarrased about. Believe me I just worked on a 370 page tech data manual for a big company. It happens lol

k) Should this be a Stickie thread?
