OK, I'm in ...

After reading today's reviews and looking over the released mechanics, I'd made my decision: I'm in for 4E.

They didn't break D&D. It's still going to be the exploratory, kill the monsters, get the treasure, roleplay with the bartender game it was before. The options will be different, but I can see that much is streamlined, and based on the 1st level character sheets it seems easy to understand the changes and looks like tremendous fun & easy to play.

I won't become a raving fanboi. There are things I don't like, some mechanical (1-1 diagonals), and most flavor (two new races I hate, didn't release some of my favorite classes in the 1st PHB, rearranged some old classic flavor not to my taste). But overall, I can change the flavor back myself, and mechanics so far look to be improved on the whole.

So WotC has convinced this grogrnard to at least pick up the core books, and when an opportunity comes, to try them out.

No DI for me, thanks -- no sale there. But I'm confident the game as a whole will carry forward. Better? Maybe yes, maybe no, but at least a suitable successor for the game I've loved for 27 years now.

Welcome to the club. We have tee-shirts. ;)

I've been in for a long time, so I'm looking from a different pov, but when I saw the character sheets my first reaction was "These look just like 3e characters." I didn't see that much change. A slight disappointment: at the moment, I'm not sure it will play that much differently.

It wouldn't bother me so much if the (ridiculous) ten dollars a month could be amortized if you buy books from their online shop. Like, but a thirty dollar book from them online, and you get that months online fee taken care of free.

As it is, so expect people to buy a book (or two) a month, and pay $10 a month for online content (and its only that "cheap" if you commit to a year) is unrealistic on such a curious level that it *seems* like they haven't actually researched. Websites tried that around 2002-2003. It didn't work. Even if it were reasonable for one website to charge that sort of fee, they're forgetting (to their detriment more then ours) that we're probably subscribing to more then one website, and eventually cuts have to be made. This ten bucks a month thing maybe wont "FAIL", but it wont be as successful as they think it'll be, and sooner than later will transform into probably $40-50 per year.

I'm excited about 4E otherwise though. No grognard here. Just someone who loves DnD, but has financial obligations that preclude being ripped off.

I'm still not ready to say "I'm in" even if it is to my advantage to do so, but I am in the camp that says that I'll give it a fair chance.

And those are my 'Smores you're eating!

I don't want to be the negative nelly here but I'll repost a post I made on another board:

"I was actually starting to move towards the 4e camp, but the news from the D&D Experience is making me think of cancelling my pre-orders. The power levels seem way too high; and we're talking 1st level here and it's way too high. I'd hate to see higher level play. I need to know if it's possible to power it down. I know some might say I should play a different game, but I've been playing about the same power level since the Red Box; so if I can't still play me game then it's not my D&D anymore. I'm also concerned that the game is built around the miniatures line rather than visa versa."

I hope I'm wrong. It just looks like our philosophies of play are too far apart for reconciliation. Some of the reviews make me think I should break out my old Ultimate Powers Book, since the power level is approaching Marvel Super Heroes levels. ;)
