On RotK extended edition - Spoilers -

From Ain't It Cool News, so take with a bucket of salt:

I would sincerely hope they didn't give the Extended Edition to another effects firm. WETA's done a great job so far.....they'd anger a lot of people doing this..

And they're not idiots over there, so I'd question the validity of the rumour..

That Newline is concerned with the cost of the extended version is laughable. The EE DVDs have done very well and this movie is supossed to make a BILLION dollars in its theatrical release alone. They spent less than half that much for all three movies including promotions.

I seriously doubt they are. Remember, Jackson went to New Line with a proposal, hoping to make two movies if they wouldn't approve three, and New Line president Robert Shaye told him to make it three. Jackson then had a contract to deliver a 2 hour 40 minute film for each one, and New Line let him go with a full three hour version. I doubt New Line is going to piss every one off on the sixth release in the series. (FotR, FotRee, TTT, TTTee, RotK, RotKee).

I don't know where I read this, but I saw it mentioned that the extended edition would be 6 hours? Anyone know if this is true? I myself think this incredibly strange and somewhat silly (as it would totally ruin the theatrical cut, which would then only contain just more than half of the "real" movie rendering it barely more than an extended trailer  ).

The last rumour I heard was 40-50 minutes of extra footage, which would push it past 4 hours, but not 6.

Could be outdated, though :)

I heard PJ's orginal cut of RotK was 4 hours, 55 minutes. He trimed it to 3h 20m foir the TC. I don't think PJ would put all of what He cut back in.

In a newspaper article I read, that the first cut of RotK was 4 hours and a half. Of course one could argue, that accuracy is not the domain of most newspapers anymore, but I'll believe this simply because it would rock to have a 270 minute RotK. If you're going to convince me otherwise: Shush! :p

Why not. Is that not the point of an extended version of a film, to include all that you wanted to do, but could not due to the time constraints of a theatrical release.

You know, I just don't see why they won't show the Extended Editions in movie theatres. I mean, just a couple theatres in some major cities upon release. I guess it could hurt some of the initial Theatrical release box office $$ at first, but now that the TR of RotK is out, why not release RotK EE in theatres when it comes out. I would really like to see TT EE on a big screeen, since I only have a 20" screen here at the house (but it does look to bad). :D

Uh... they were showing FotR-E and TTT-E in theatres leading up to the release of RotK...
